LEON RUSSELL  Americana  (Paradise,1978) - Pop rock


     Not quite as bad as others have portrayed it as while there are a few disco tracks here calling this entire album a disco album is an exaggeration as there are some fine ballads and r&b tracks but as is too often the case with Leon you don't get a consistently good album since the outstanding debut album. The Chicago horns section is certainly not the reason for the bad tracks given that this is the band at their prime with Terry Kath still alive and way before their truly insipid David Foster/Diane Warren phase in the late 80s to early 90s. Not Leon's best work but certainly not his worse either.

LITTLE DRUMMER BOY...Matt Cameron

        More than any other drummer, Matt Cameron laid the rhythmic foundation for the Nineties rock revolution, reconciling proggy technicality with overwhelming force. He aptly characterized his rotary-blade rhythms on the 1991 Soundgarden track "Jesus Christ Pose" as "a pure assault of the senses," but that efficient brutality wasn't necessarily characteristic of Cameron's work with the band – his drumming on  Superunknown  is as thoughtful as it is heavy, from the fluid asymmetry of "Spoonman" to the unshakeable backbeat of "Fell on Black Days." Twenty years after its release, Dave Grohl was  still raving , "Nobody played drums like Matt."   GRAVY TRAIN  Gravy Train  (Vertigo,1970) - Progressive rock       Their debut shows Gravy Train as a brave and daring underground band, heavily influenced by and derivative of other prog/hard acts of the time, yet actually trying to push the boundaries forward. Unfortunately, since the album bombed, the guys preferred to dump all the experimentation of these songs in favour of a smoother, more commercial sound later on, which totally destroyed their idiosyncrasy and forever nailed them as second-rate good-for-nothings.
