HARLIS  Night Meets The Day  (Sky,1977) - Kraut/Prog rock


     “Night Meets The Day” is a conceptal album. It tells the story of a shipwrecked person who lures a ship on a deserted island by means of a beacon, makes a short career as a pirate, and finally ends up as a shipwreck after a lost battle.
     Musically, Harlis offer a mixture of progressive rock and melodic hard rock. In the foreground is the guitar with some nice solos, some songs are dominated by simple, hard riffs (“Ruler of the Island”, “King of the Pirates”). The keyboards always remain in the background and are limited to atmospheric background as in the beautiful instrumental “Endless Sea”.
     “Night Meets The Day” is not an essential album, but it is too much for simple hard rock.

        More than any other drummer, Matt Cameron laid the rhythmic foundation for the Nineties rock revolution, reconciling proggy technicality with overwhelming force. He aptly characterized his rotary-blade rhythms on the 1991 Soundgarden track "Jesus Christ Pose" as "a pure assault of the senses," but that efficient brutality wasn't necessarily characteristic of Cameron's work with the band – his drumming on  Superunknown  is as thoughtful as it is heavy, from the fluid asymmetry of "Spoonman" to the unshakeable backbeat of "Fell on Black Days." Twenty years after its release, Dave Grohl was  still raving , "Nobody played drums like Matt."   GRAVY TRAIN  Gravy Train  (Vertigo,1970) - Progressive rock       Their debut shows Gravy Train as a brave and daring underground band, heavily influenced by and derivative of other prog/hard acts of the time, yet actually trying to push the boundaries forward. Unfortunately, since the album bombed, the guys preferred to dump all the experimentation of these songs in favour of a smoother, more commercial sound later on, which totally destroyed their idiosyncrasy and forever nailed them as second-rate good-for-nothings.
