ONCE UPON A TIME...One Of The Boys

Слика
ROGER DALTREY  One Of The Boys  (Polydor,1977) - Rock       Beyond a few good songs,  One of the Boys  does keep interesting company, including John Entwistle,  Eric Clapton  and a previously unreleased song from Paul McCartney ,  Giddy , that has its origins in “Rode All Night” from the Ram  sessions. The latter song is one of the few cases where Daltrey’s vocals fall short of the original (McCartney didn’t get enough credit for his vocals, in my opinion). You could probably live a full and rewarding life without owning any of Roger Daltrey’s records, unless you’re a hardcore Who fan, in which case you’re likely to own at least one of these albums, with  One of the Boys  as good a choice as any. ONCE UPON A TIME...Short Stories

Слика
STEVE GIBBONS  Short Stories  (Wizard,1971) - Rock       A real classic rock gem from Birmingham's elder statesman of rock. Recorded in 1969 with a stellar musical cast: Countryrock pickers deluxe Albert Lee & Gerry Donahue on the Telecaster, old Move/Balls colleague Trevor Burton on bass, half of Spooky Tooth (Gary Wright, Greg Ridley & Mike Kellie), Gerry Conway on steel guitar, Doris Troy and Madeleine Bell on backup vocals and produced by Jimmy Miller who stood for the best records of Traffic and the Rolling Stones. The tracks are an oustanding mix of uptempo (country-) rockers, ballads and swiniging brass rock (with an uncredited Chris Barber on trombone). A real fascinating template for the music to come from the Steve Gibbons Band from the mid 1970s on, that toured the world with the likes of The Who, AC/DC or Lynyrd Skynyrd.   MATTHEW FISHER  I'll Be There  (RCA,1974) - Rock       I'll Be There was Matthew Fisher's second solo album, but he didn't seem to have much to say. While pleasant enough, I'll Be There showed that the buying public wasn't. VOICES IN THE SKY...Barbara Mason

Слика
As an 18-year-old in 1965, Barbara Mason captured the innocent stirrings of adolescence on the self-penned  Yes I’m Ready , a US #3 R&B hit which is widely acknowledged as the beginning of the Philadelphia sound, with its use of sweet, sweeping strings and the musicians who would go on to form the nucleus of the Philadelphia International label’s house band, MFSB.       Mason, who wasn’t raised in the church but honed her craft in local talent shows and sang along to  Etta James , Gloria Lynne and  Aretha  records on the radio, took to the road with  Curtis Mayfield ‘s The Impressions in 1966 after a string of R&B hits like  Sad Sad Girl  and  I Need Love , which built on the same formula as  Yes I’m Ready .       By the turn of the decade, she had graduated from teen crush to tempestuous lover, documenting bedroom dramas in forthright fashion.       In 1972 she worked with Mayfield on a version of his  Give Me Your Love  for an album of the same name, and in 1975 score

ONCE UPON A TIME...Vixen

VIXEN  Vixen  (EMI Manhattan,1988) - Hard rock       The  Vixen  album has a great, but easy, sound. It’s easy to sing to and all of the songs are catchy. Janet Gardner has a great voice and Jan Kuehnemund impresses on her guitar. Remembering the 80s, Jan Kuehnemund, Lita Ford, and Nancy Wilson (Heart) were three of the best female guitar players in all of Hard Rock/Metal. ONCE UPON A TIME...All Is Forgiven

Слика
SIREN  All Is Forgiven  (Mercury,1989) - Rock       While the ELP-esque cover artwork might suggest a progressive rock album, Siren's sound definitely falls into the mainstream pop/rock style of the late 80's. I hear a lot of similarities to artists like Private Life, Robin Beck, and 80's era Heart, and singer Kristin Massey's vocals sound like a cross between Stevie Nicks and Belinda Carlisle. ONCE UPON A TIME...Marilyn Martin

Слика
MARILYN MARTIN  Marilyn Martin  (Atlantic,1986) - Pop rock       In late 1985, there was good reason to believe that Marilyn Martin would become a pop/rock superstar. Her duet with  Phil Collins , "Separate Lives," soared to number one on the pop charts, and her supporters assumed that she was going to become as big as  Stevie Nicks ,  Laura Branigan  or  Pat Benatar . But regrettably, Martin's commercial success turned out to be short-lived -- after 1988's  T his Is Serious , she was dropped by Atlantic and never recorded another album. Nonetheless, the Southern vocalist had a lot of potential, and she showed considerable promise on this self-titled debut album of 1986.  TRACKLIST : Night Moves                        Body And The Beat                        Too Much Too Soon                        Turn It On                        The Dream Is Always The Same                        One Step Closer                        Beauty Of The Beast                        Mo

ONCE UPON A TIME...Rest On Me

Слика
KIM CARNES  Rest On Me  (Amos,1971) - Pop rock      K im has a voice that you'll always remember you listen to it.  Kim definitely had some country roots with this early career record.  The album probably only clocks in at about 30 minutes, but still is a pleasant listen to hear what her voice sounded like before the rasp really kicked in as in the 1980s. ONCE UPON A TIME...I've Got The Music In Me

Слика
KIKI DEE BAND  I've Got The Music In Me  (Rocket,1974) - Pop rock       "I've Got the Music in Me" scored Dee a No. 12 U.S. hit and fared almost as well at home in the U.K. at No. 19; it set the upbeat tone for an album of songs entirely written by band members Dee, Boshell, and Partridge.   I've Got the Music in Me  subtly took Dee in a more commercial soft rock direction, losing most of the country-esque trappings of  Tumbleweed Connection -era Elton John while still showcasing her exquisite pipes in an increasingly confident, ever-soulful setting.  Dee's deep soul was evident from her earliest days, and in 1970, she notably became the first white British artist to be signed by Berry Gordy's Motown Records. ONCE UPON A TIME...Sleepless Nights

Слика
ALAN GORRIE  Sleepless Nights  (A&M,1985) - Funk/Soul       Scottish born bassist, guitarist, keyboardist and singer Alan Gorrie, founding member of the classic 'AVERAGE WHITE BAND', released his one and only solo album in 1985.      T he album mixes classic Westcoast AOR elements with the typical '80s Hi-Tech synthetic sounds.       'Electric Between Us" sounds a lot like Kenny Loggins mid-eighties stuff. 'Diary Of Fools' is a beautiful ballad in the Maxus style, while 'That Kinda Girl' wouldn't be out of place in any Michael McDonald's album.  'I Can Take It' goes very hi-tech, the title track is a sensual ballad that reminds me Ned Doheny, and 'The Age Of Steam' is a classic and really good '80s piece. BASS CULTURE...Joey DeMaio

Слика
Loincloth or not ("not" being a premiere choice for a man approaching his 70s), Manowar's Joey DeMaio is the only bassist on this list to play a piccolo bass, which affords him a tonality unlike any other present here. He can play at lightning fast speeds thanks to the slim bass neck, giving heavy metal's sword defenders an unmistakable clank, which works twice as well with anthemic marching tempos Manowar have a knack for. ONCE UPON A TIME...Live

Слика
GOLDEN EARRING  Live  (Polydor,1977) - Live       At this point the band included founding members George Kooymans and Rinus Gerritsen , as well as Barry Hay and Cesar Zuiderwik, as well and Eelxo Geiling. Aside from Geiling, the other 4 members would remain permanent members until the end. The only personnel changes in the ’70s would be the extra guitar player or keyboard player that the band added for various albums. But, yeah – at the time of the  Live  album, Golden Earring was a 5 -piece, guitar heavy band; not heavy like ‘metal’, just lots of that cool ’70s guitar sound, with some slide guitar, lengthy solos, etc… The band was far from a ‘pop’ band here, stretching out the 10 tracks here with extended jams and solos. TRACKLIST : 1 - Candy's Going Bad / She Flies On Strange Ways / Mad Love's Comin' /                                    Eight Miles High / Vanilla Queen                        2 - To The Hilt / Fightin' Windmills / Con Man / Radar Love / Just Like Vi

ONCE UPON A TIME...Flying The Flag

Слика
CLIMAX BLUES BAND  Flying The Flag  (WB,1980) - Rock,Blues       Flying the Flag , the 1980 release from seminal blues/rock/pop/funk act Climax Blues Band was originally intended to signify the band 'flying the flag for their homeland Britain', but as it worked out the album only further cemented their success in the US. With a second smash hit single in the form of "I Love You", the band were continuing on with their more commercial direction, but there were still a few bluesy nods to their past in this otherwise very solid and enjoyable release. ONCE UPON A TIME...Sugarloaf

Слика
SUGARLOAF  Sugarloaf  (Liberty,1970) - Psychedelic rock       This debut album from 1970 is good to me as the music is still raw an it represents the seventies music in terms of guitar riffs and fills as well as keyboard work. It opens with their top hit song (no. 3 in the US) Green-Eyed Lady where the music is really vintage and I can sense a very dynamic riffs and good keyboard work. The band also play the Medley: Bach Doors Man / Chest Fever nicely and it has a very good combination of solo keyboard / hammond combined with guitar. The drum work sounds raw and it's nice hearing this old school classic rock. The long keyboard work and guitar rhythm section has made this song sounds interesting to my ear. West of Tomorrow starts with simple basslines followed with vocal line and the music moves in medium tempo. Gold and the Blues is really an excellent instrumental blues track with great keyboard / hammond work and raw guitar work. I sometime make this track as my one of my playl

ONCE UPON A TIME...Butts Band

Слика
BUTTS BAND  Butts Band  (Blue Thumb,1973) - Rock       The Butts Band were a mixture of styles encompassing rock, soul, blues, jazz funk and even a smattering of reggae and calypso. They recorded their self titled debut album in two distinct parts during 1973, one in England and one in Jamaica with the album hitting the streets later that year.        “The Butts Band” was well received on its release and a low key tour and several TV appearances followed. However, Kreiger and Densmore had returned to America whilst Roden, Chen and Davies remained in London. This of course proved difficult logistically and the former Doors men jettisoned Roden, Chen and Davies the following year before making a second album. That was a great pity as it would have been very interesting to see how this line up would have developed. Roden of course went on to have a moderately successful solo career and is widely regarded as one of the finest singers of his or any generation, particularly in the eyes o

ONCE UPON A TIME...Silk Torpedo

Слика
PRETTY THINGS  Silk Torpedo  (Swan Song,1974) - Rock       T he Things were at a low professional ebb when they made two albums for Led Zeppelin’s Swansong imprint, beginning with this 1974 offering. To their benefactors, artistes of their calibre deserved nothing less than, say, a colliery band and The London Philharmonic’s string section to augment Is It Only Love, one of several highlights on an LP that received middling reviews first time round.        While Belfast Cowboys addresses then-topical issues, its impact is undiminished thanks to mainstay Phil May’s lyrical flair as well as multi-layered vocals as breathtaking as any of The Beach Boys’ or The Hollies’ choral intricacies. Moreover, if directed chiefly at North American FM radio (and thus earning a placing in the  Billboard  chart’s lower reaches),  Silk Torpedo  is far from bland – as instanced by Atlanta/LANTA during which an acoustic six-string opening leads to an opaque chant buried beneath splattering percussion.  T
