ONCE UPON A TIME...Ibis

Слика
IBIS  Ibis  (Polydor,1975) - Progressive rock       This eponymous album from Italian band Ibis was released in 1975, it's not their debut but their third after the records Canti D'Innozenza, Canti D'Esperienza (1973) and Sun Supreme (1974). The prime mover is singer/guitarplayer Nico Di Palo, known as a member from the legendary Italian formation The New Trolls. The music on Ibis is varied: the two long tracks Narratio and Ritrovarci deliver sumptuous keyboards (a bit similar to Hungarian band Omega) and fiery guitar duels, the song Passa Il Tempo contains wonderful acoustic guitar and Keep On Movin' features straight rock and roll! My highlight on this LP is the composition Strada, a beautiful blend of electric piano, sensitive electric guitar, flute and a swinging rhythm-section. Pleasant and varied album, no less or more. ONCE UPON A TIME...La Leyla

Слика
RAMSES La Leyla  (Sky,1976) - Kraut/Prog rock       Another German prog rock band from the mid to late '70s, this is their debut album. Basically another band in the ELOY and GROBSCHNITT vein, and like those bands, RAMSES sung in English. Anyway, the music is pretty decent prog rock with some great spacy keyboards (synthesizers, Mellotron, Solina string synth) and great guitar work. "La Leyla" falls short of being a classic of German prog, but still worth having. ONCE UPON A TIME...Nurses Song With Elephants

Слика
DAVID BEDFORD  Nurses Song With Elephants  (Dandelion,1972) - Modern classical       To most people, David Bedford is best known for his work with  Kevin Ayers  and  Roy Harper , but Bedford was already a composer with avant-garde credentials before teaming up with them. The title track, for example, is a piece for ten acoustic guitars, with elephants represented by a moistened thumb dragged across the back of the soundbox; the "Nurse's Song" is actually a setting of the  Blake  poem, with a bass guitar accompaniment by  Mike Oldfield . Every track here is scored for unusual ensembles, such as "Sad and Lonely Faces," which has six pianos and four woodwinds, behind  Ayers  intoning a poem, or "Some Bright Stars for Queen's College," with 80 voices and 27 plastic twirlers. In some ways, it's a product of its time, when boundary-pushing in modern classical music was the norm, not the exception. And as such, some of it works, some of it is experi

ONCE UPON A TIME...Direct To Disc

Слика
FM  Direct To Disc  (Labyrinth,1978) - Progressive rock       Nash the Slash left FM to pursue a solo career, and in his place was Ben Mink, also on electric violin and electric mandolin. The band recorded their second album, called Direct to Disc, released on the Labyrinth label. If you were put off by the commercial tendencies of their other albums, you’ll be much happier with this album. It consists of two side-length cuts (title track and “Border Crossing”) which were largely improvised. Ben Mink really shows what he’s made of on violin, while Cameron Hawkins gives some really trippy spacy synthesizers, from his Moog and string synths. I even think Martin Deller gives us some of his most interesting drum work. The music goes through different changes, some of them sound like FM as you expect, especially the vocal sections, but a lot of it really gets very experimental with synth effects. Given this was a one-take recording, there might be a couple of passages that don’t quite cut

ONCE UPON A TIME...Clear Through The Night

Слика
STEVE MARRIOTT'S ALL STARS  Clear Through The Night  (NMC,1999) - Rock       The man put out a lot of live cd's, but only about 4 LP's of solo studio music. This is a compilation of unreleased stuff and it covers a variety of styles--mostly rock and bluesy tunes and is filled with quality music. ONCE UPON A TIME...Metropolitan Man

Слика
ALAN PRICE  Metropolitan Man  (Polydor,1975) - Rock       The relative success of  Between Today & Yesterday  made Alan invest in an attempt to repeat the same approach, but on a slightly humbler scale — this, too, is largely a conceptual, and this time an even more personal album about the past and the present, but lacking the elements of grandeur that may have appealed to the «progressively trained» buyers in 1974. Actually, it is this low-key attitude that may explain why its predecessor sold reasonably well, whereas  Metropolitan Man  seems to have bombed, and even in retrospect remains totally obscure, when in reality it is every bit as good as its predecessor and maybe even better — at least in terms of consistency. ONCE UPON A TIME...Siamese Friends

Слика
IAN MATTHEWS  Siamese Friends  (Rockburgh,1979) - Pop rock       ‘Siamese Friends’ (1979) features a number of co-writing contributions from Iain’s new band-member colleagues Mark Griffiths and Bob Metzger, and the overall band were taken from Matthews’ touring bands of that time. It follows on nicely from the previous album, but seems to have suffered from circumstances that prevented good promotion. But it’s still quality, from the Matthews/Griffiths/Metzger opener ‘You Don’t See Me’, the cover of John Martyn’s ‘Anna’, an uptempo shuffle song from Jona Lewie no less ‘The Baby She’s On The Street’ and a pre-Fleetwood Mac Stevie Nicks number ‘Crying In The Night’ that has a kind of Squeeze quality, it’s an excellent album that, once again, stands up well, even now. ONCE UPON A TIME...The Road To Ruin

Слика
JOHN & BEVERLEY MARTYN  The Road To Ruin  (Island,1970) - Folk rock       This was the second, and final, album Martyn made with his wife, vocalist/songwriter Beverley, and followed the duo's  Stormbringer  (Island), released earlier the same year. A more genuinely collaborative effort than  Stormbringer , the nine tracks which made up the original LP release of  The Road To Ruin  include one written by Beverley ("Primrose Hill") and three others jointly composed by Beverley and John ("Auntie Aviator," "Sorry To Be So Long," "Say What You Can"), on all four of which Beverley takes lead vocals. It is these tracks, along with Paul Wheeler's "Give Us A Ring," written for singer/songwriter Nick Drake and the only track on the album not composed by the Martyns, which give the album so much of its affective power and historical resonance.  TRACKLIST : Primrose Hill                       Parcels                       Auntie Aviat

ONCE UPON A TIME...Crucifix In A Horseshoe

Слика
PAUL JONES  Crucifix In A Horseshoe  (Vertigo,1971) - Rock/Soft rock       Paul Jones ( real name Paul Pond ) was a certified Pop star in the UK in the mid 60's as lead singer with Manfred Mann and then briefly as a solo artist following his role as Steven Shorter in the great youth culture film "Privilege" in 1966. After a his initial solo success his career began a slow and steady decline to where at a point in the late 60's some of his records were released only in Sweden. This seemed quite odd because Jones' had talent to burn, he possessed a superb voice that sounded at times like both David Bowie and Peter Hammill ( a little known fact is that Jones was once asked to be lead singer for The Rolling Stones prior to Mick Jagger joining ).   TRACKLIST : Life After Death                        Motel Blues                        And You Say I'm Too Dependent On My Mind                        Construction Workers Song                        Song (For Stan Stu

LITTLE DRUMMER BOY...Chester Thompson

Слика
When  Genesis   snatched Chester Thompson out of Weather Report, they didn’t get a drummer who steered them toward jazz, rather they got one who could play Phil Collins’ existing drum parts that much more forcefully. Thompson’s always been especially good at locking in with a rhythm partner, whether it’s his live drum duets with Collins, his interplay with bassist Alphonso Johnson in Weather Report, or his drum/mallet teaming with Ruth Underwood in  Frank Zappa ’s band. ONCE UPON A TIME...Interrupted Journey

VERITY  Interrupted Journey  (PRT,1983) - Rock       John Verity  replaced  Russ Ballard  in the group  Argent  starting with 1975's  Circus  album. This album is notable as it features ex members of Charlie & Argent aswell as Genesis' Mike Rutherford. A good blend of AOR in 'Just Another Day' & 'Love Is Blind' to the sharper, more rockier approach of the excellent 'Rescue Me' & 'Chippin' Away At The Stone'.   TRACKLIST : Rescue Me                        Just Another Day                        Stay With Me Baby                        Love Is Blind                        Are You Ready For This                        You're The Loser                        It's Comin' Right                        Chippin' Away At The Stone                        In The Arms Of Someone Else                        Fallin' https://www.sendspace.com/file/ysq8po

ONCE UPON A TIME...Choice Cuts

Слика
CHOICE  Choice Cuts  (Polydor,1980) - Hard/Melodic rock       I don't like much the first 2 tracks (the singles of this album), obviously an attempt to conquer the radio waves. Not bad, just not enough good to me.       But things are getting better with 'The Letter', and even more with 'Annie D', old school song but well crafted and performed.      The best song here arrives on 'I've Got My Mind On Ruby', the structure has an inkling of Franke And The Knockouts in the mix. Same with 'Your Eyes', also with a flavor similar to the band MPG. 'Take Me Down' is a mid-tempo with some nice guitar work, while 'For You' sounds outdated but radio-friendly. ONCE UPON A TIME...Marseille

Слика
MARSEILLE Red, White And Slightly Blue  (Mountain,1978) - NWOBHM/Hard rock       Marseille was a band that originated in Liverpool, England in 1976.  Their style was NWOBHM and came into existence in the earlier part of the New Wave musical era.  Original band members were Paul Dale (vocals), Neil Buchanan (guitar), Andy Charters (guitar), Keith Knowles (drums), and Steve Dinwoodie (bass).       Their first album was “Red, White, and Slightly Blue” and was released in 1978. It was recorded by Mountain records. Critics tended to comment that Marseille’s songs were of dubious quality, but that the band was tight.       Their music had all of the standard ingredients for a NWOBHM band. They were known for the volume at which they played, a brash and glitzy onstage look, and offensively sexual lyrics. These characteristics turned some listeners off, while exciting others. Before long, Marseille had a small but loyal cadre of fans. They promoted their album by playing as support the likes

GREGG ROLIE  Gringo  (Columbia,1987) - Rock       Gringo  is the second solo album by American musician Gregg Rolie, released in 1987. The album showcases Rolie's talents as a singer, songwriter, and keyboardist, building upon his experiences with iconic bands like Santana and Journey.       "Gringo" offers a diverse range of musical styles, blending elements of rock, pop, and Latin influences. Rolie's distinctive vocals soar over catchy melodies and energetic rhythms, creating a vibrant and engaging listening experience. The album features a combination of upbeat, anthemic tracks and introspective, soulful ballads, providing a well-rounded musical journey. ONCE UPON A TIME...Bad Boys

HAYWIRE  Bad Boys  (Attic,1986) - Hard rock       Haywire is Canadian hard rock band formed 1982 in Charlottetown.   The production is charmingly dated (VERY heavy on keyboards and metallic guitar riffs), but it oddly enhances the strength of the band's songwriting and amazing lead singer Paul MacAusland's supple voice, as well as the band's 3-part harmony. There were 2 singles and videos released on this album, the leadoff 2 tracks, the ultracatchy "Bad Bad Boy" and sorta epic "Standing In Line", but the album doesn't stop there in quality tracks.   TRACKLIST : Bad Bad Boy                    Standin' In Line                    (She's Not) The Kind Of Girl                    Holding You                    Out Of My Head                    When You Fall Out Of Love                    3 Wishes                    Girl In Love                    Shot In The Dark                    Crazy https://www.sendspace.com/file/ndhqxw
