ONCE UPON A TIME...My Maria

Слика
B.W. STEVENSON  My Maria  (RCA,1973) - Country       Though best remembered for his hit with the title track, Stevenson had an incredible ear for a song. Several of the tracks on this record were later covered by, and were hits for, other artists. In fact, listen for how closely  Three Dog Night  copied Stevenson for their hit on "Shambala." ONCE UPON A TIME...Warpig

Слика
WARPIG  Warpig  (Fonthill,1970) - Hard rock       Warpig  flaunt their  Deep Purple  influence, mostly through the keyboard presence, performed here by Dana Smith. Beyond that, the band offer a very basic hard rock set-up. The drums are tight and punchy, and the guitar solos (of which there are plenty) don't dare to tread outside the comforting familiarity of the pentatonic scale. Even for their time, I don't think  Warpig  would be turning any heads with their style; of the bands I've heard playing this style, these guys sound like most of them. Where I think  Warpig  begin to stand out is the personality they inject into the formula. As a rule, bands of their ilk attempted to put a faster, grittier and generally  heavier  angle on the common formula they were using. In this regard, their basic premise wasn't much different from the average, but I haven't heard too many that got across the same extent of energy.  Warpig  exhibit their lustful motivations front an

ONCE UPON A TIME...Living In The 70s

Слика
SKYHOOKS  Living In The 70s  (Mushroom,1974) - Glam rock        The Skyhooks’ debut album kicks off with the title track and also contains the hit  Horror Movie , which both remain prime examples of just how keen an observer of social issues was the eye of chief songwriter and bassist Greg Macainsh. His lyrics could also be wry ( You just Like Me ‘cos I’m   Good in Bed ) and at times sarcastic ( Whatever Happened to the Revolution? ), but Macainsh also had the uncanny ability to tell a story inside four minutes ( Balwyn Calling ). He was a gifted songwriter. Over the years, much has been made – rightly – of the references to Melbourne locations littered throughout his songs. In mid-70’s Australia, this was rare for a local band, and it was certainly one of the facets which set Skyhooks apart from the crowd. DON'T SHOOT ME...Gary Wright

Слика
Born in 1943 in New Jersey, Wright played keyboards on record by B.B. King, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ringo Starr, Harry Nilsson and Ronnie Spector and in the late ’60s formed band the New York Times who soon changed their name to  Spooky Tooth  and ran from 1967 to 1974 and while co-leading that band also played on George Harrison’s  All Things Must Pass . After Spooky Tooth, Wright struck solo paydirt with 1975’s  The Dream Weaver , one of the first rock albums to be made almost entirely with synthesizers. The title track and “My Love is Alive” both reached #2 in the US. The Dream Weaver WB,1975 https://www.sendspace.com/file/kfwi2t

ONCE UPON A TIME...Sunbirds

Слика
SUNBIRDS  Sunbirds  (BASF,1971) - Jazz / Prog rock            International Munich based Krautrock fusion supergroup fronted by Klaus Weiss. They made a dreamy, yet powerful fusion with an abundance of solos, extensively featuring Belgian guitarist Philip Catherine on the debut. TRACKLIST : Kwaeli                        Sunrise                        Spanish Sun                        Sunshine                        Sunbirds                        Blues For DS https://www.sendspace.com/file/5miijs

ONCE UPON A TIME...Mk II

Слика
STEAMHAMMER  Mk II  (CBS,1970) - Progressive/Jazz rock       "Steamhammer's second offering featured new drummer Mick Bradley, who added a sense of timing similar to Ginger Baker, and saxaphonist/flutist Steve Joliffe, who brought some jazz touches. The band stretched into new territory on this one and mostly did so successfully. A couple of the arrangements get a bit "busy" ("Johnny Carl Morton" in particular), but the rest of the album is an excellant blend of blues, jazz and folk. ONCE UPON A TIME...Future Legends

Слика
FRUUPP  Future Legends  (Dawn,1973) - Progressive rock       Well this was the debut by an Irish Proto-progressive and pastoral band of the seventies. The sound is similar to that one of the early GENESIS (period regarding " Trespass"), with a pastoral touch of their own and a great sense of melody, which will be developed by means of the second album, closer to such symphonic progressive. TRACKLIST : Future Legends                        Decision                        As Day Breaks With Dawn                        Graveyard Epistle                        Lord Of The Incubus                        Olde Tyme Future                        Song For A Thought                        Future Legends https://www.sendspace.com/file/j25uhd

ONCE UPON A TIME...Flash

Слика
FLASH  Flash  (Sovereign,1972) - Progressive rock       An album that could easily have been called "Son of Yes." With rippling keyboard passages and crackling lead guitar, the sound is less intense and demanding than Yes, but also less interesting. PNCE UPON A TIME...L'Heptade

Слика
HARMONIUM  L'Heptude  (CBS,1976) - Progressive rock       L’Heptade is considered one of the defining albums of Quebec rock; it is certainly the most famous homegrown progressive-rock opus ever released here.       The ambitious collection was driven by singer-songwriter Fiori’s burning desire to match the best progressive music being produced at the time in the U.K. and the U.S.        The songs are long, musically sophisticated and feature a wide array of musicians, including the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal — all built around Fiori’s falsetto vocals and his accomplished acoustic guitar playing. ONCE UPON A TIME...Ballermann

Слика
GROBSCHNITT Ballermann  (Brain,1974) - Kraut/Prog rock       With the addition of keysman Volker "Mist" Kahrs, the Grobschnitt sound began to take shape. The "wacky" side of the band is immediately apparent on the hilarious "Sahara", featuring creepy slowed-down vocals from Eroc. From then on, it's a wild ride of keys-and-guitars prog. Definitely a lot more symphonic than their debut, with little of the hippie feel of their first (the folkish "Drummer's Dream" comes close). Yes seems to be the dominant influence (Lupo even offers a whimsical quote from "Yours Is No Disgrace" in the middle of "Nickel-Odeon"), and the disc peaks with the lengthy and adventurous "Magic Train", which does indeed take the listener for a ride.       The second disc of the original double LP is dedicated to a 33-minute version of the live concert favourite piece "Solar Music". A cosmic, jamming-oriented piece, it's s

LITTLE DRUMMER BOY...Jon Hiseman

Слика
Like many of his contemporaries ( Ginger Baker , Bill Bruford), Jon Hiseman was a jazzman who crossed into the rock world. In another time, he would have been at home driving a big band. His work with Colosseum, one of the UK’s first and greatest fusion bands, is the most celebrated, but prog enthusiasts need to check out the two albums by Tempest, with a young Allan Holdsworth on guitar. He also joined the rock and jazz influences to blues on one of John Mayall’s most ambitious pieces, the side-long “ Bare Wires ” suite. ONCE UPON A TIME...Greetings From LA

Слика
TIM BUCKLEY  Gretings From LA  (Straight,1972) - Funk rock       Greetings From L.A.  wasn’t well received back in 1972 but looking back at that year in music it’s not hard to see why Buckley may have been overlooked. There was so many major releases from those still raved about today including the likes of Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Lou Reed, David Bowie and Jimi Hendrix – the list could go on. To me, it’s a shame people allowed him to fall out of the loop as his new style paralleled the seductive style of The Doors who were busy taking the world by storm. ONCE UPON A TIME...Cocker

Слика
JOE COCKER  Cocker  (EMI,1986) - Pop rock       “Cocker is the tenth studio album by Joe Cocker. It features hit singles “You Can Leave Your Hat On” and “Don’t You Love Me Anymore”, the first made popular after its use in the famous striptease scene in the film 9 1/2 Weeks. Released as a single, Cocker’s version of the song peaked at No. 35 on Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks. The album also features a rendition of Marvin Gaye’s “Inner City Blues”, a Motown legend’s classic lament to urban decay.” TRACKLIST : Shelter Me                        A To Z                        Don't You Love Me Anymore                        Living Without Your Love                        Don't Drink The Water                        You Can Leave Your Hat On                        Heart Of The Matter                        Inner City Blues                        Love Is On A Fade                        Heaven https://www.sendspace.com/file/p2084e

ONCE UPON A TIME...Long Player

Слика
FACES  Long Player  (WB,1971) - Blues rock       These are songs that celebrate home, from family to the neighborhood, and that big heart beats strong in the ballads, too, from the aching “Sweet Lady Mary” to the extraordinary reworking of Paul McCartney’s “Maybe I’m Amazed,” which soars in ways Macca’s exceptional original never did. Then, there’s there humor — the ramshackle “On the Beach,” the throwaway lines from Rod on “Had Me a Real Good Time” — which give this a warm, cheerful heart that helps make Long Player a record as big, messy, and wonderful as life itself. ONCE UPON A TIME...Chicago At Carnegie Hall

Слика
CHICAGO  Chicago IV-At Carnegie Hall  (Columbia,1971) - Jazz rock       Carnegie Hall may be prestigious, but it has never been a good rock venue, and Chicago seems intimidated on this four-LP (three-CD) set, recreating material from its first three albums. Completists should note the inclusion of the anti-Nixon "A Song For Richard And His Friends," not previously available.  TRACKLIST D1 : In The Country / Fancy Colours / Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is                                        (I&II) / South California Purples / Questions 67 & 68 / Sing A Mean Tune Kid /                                      Beginnings                          D2 : It Better End Soon (I-V) / Introduction ( Mother / Lowdown / Flight 602 /                                                Motorboat To Mars /  Free / Where Do We Go From Here / I Don't Want Your                                            Money                          D3 : Happy 'Cause I'm Going Home / B

ONCE UPON A TIME...Along The Red Ledge

Слика
HALL & OATES  Along The Red Ledge  (RCA,1978) - Pop rock       Along the Red Ledge  showed where  Daryl Hall & John Oates  were headed. Unfortunately, they weren't quite there yet.       Hall & Oates had taken a short break after turning more toward rock on 1977's gold-selling  Beauty on the Back Street . Hall recorded a solo debut with  King Crimson 's Robert Fripp that emptied almost all the soul from his sound, only to see the LP shelved. But it wasn't for naught.       Fripp returned during sessions for Hall & Oates' next LP to add a guitar solo on "Don't Blame It on Love," but his real contribution had been in helping Hall sharpen his focus. The best moments on  Along the Red Ledge  echoed their work together on Hall's postponed   Sacred Songs . They were lean, nervy and presented without the fuzzy production ticks that hampered the mid-'70s. All these elements would gird Hall & Oates as they broke out in the '80s

ONCE UPON A TIME...Eddie Money

Слика
EDDIE MONEY  Eddie Money  (Wolfgang/Columbia,1977) - Rock       This strong debut benefits greatly from the expertise of veteran producer  Bruce Botnick  as well as the likes of former  Steve Miller  bassist  Lonnie Turner  and saxman  Tom Scott . Guitarist  Jimmy Lyon  was to Money what  Keith Scott  was to Bryan Adams. Money, son of a New York City cop, had a rock & roll epiphany en route to following his dad's career path. The debut album, long on craft but not without inspiration, deservedly shot radio-ready tunes "Two Tickets to Paradise" and "Baby Hold On" up the charts, the latter helped by former  Elvin Bishop   songmate  Jo Baker . The key tune is the spirited "Wanna Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star," which spells out the game plan.
