ONCE UPON A TIME...Sky 4 - Fourthcoming

Слика
SKY  Sky 4 : Fourthcoming  (Ariola,1982) - Progressive rock       The music of SKY can be described as light classical music with some vintage rock style. You might refer it to the bands like Ekseption, Focus, Fresh Aire, The Enid or Flairck. Of course they are not 100% alike but the all base their compositions on classical music and develop them further with some pop, jazz and rock elements. All of this can be predicted as the guitarist John Williams was trained with classical method. For me personally SKY 4's music flows naturally from one to another with excellent combination of electric as well as acoustic guitar that enrich the textures of the music. Tracks like "Fantasy", "My Giselle" and "Skylark" are good ones from this track. "Skylark" combines acoustic guitar work in its simplest style with bassline and piano. ONCE UPON A TIME...The Dragon

VANGELIS  The Dragon  (Affinity,1978) - Progressive rock       On The Dragon , the line-up, consisting of Vangelis on keyboards, Michel Ripoche on violin, Anargyros ‘Silver’ Koulouris on guitar, Brian Odgers on bass and Mick Waller on drums, create a unique and beautiful sounding blend of rock music, drone and ethnic folk music. The band wasn’t entirely new to Vangelis. Koulouris had been the lead guitarist in Aphrodite’s Child (and after this would go on to work with Vangelis on his first solo album, Earth ) and Rinpoche was an accomplished player who had done session work on the recently finished Aphrodite’s Child album 666 (The Apocalypse of John, 13/18) , (he would continue to work with Vangelis, appearing on a several of his solo albums in the 70’s and early 80’s). DON'T SHOOT ME...Jurgen Fritz

Слика
Fritz is best known as a member of the West German band Triumvirat. Triumvirat were a progressive, keyboard-driven band which existed in the 1970s. Fritz was the only consistent member in the band’s history, appearing on all seven of the band’s studio albums.       Fritz also served as a composer for two films,  Es ist nicht leicht ein Gott zu sein  (in English:  Hard to Be a God ) and  Eine Frau für gewisse Stunden . The latter is credited to Triumvirat, though they had since been disbanded. Fritz won an award for Best Original Soundtrack at the Sitges International Film Festival. ONCE UPON A TIME...Tarkio

Слика
BREWER & SHIPLEY  Tarkio  (Kama Sutra,1970) - Folk rock       Whilst they have much in common with similar vocal groups of the time, they differ in that they were not based in sunny California but preferred the Midwest, settling in Kansas City. Therefore the style is a little more rootsy than the smoother fare from CSN and the other LA balladeers which sets this album apart and for anyone not familiar with their work, opens a door into a whole new world of early seventies country /folk rock.       They are inextricably linked with the counter-culture due to an unexpected hit  One Toke Over The Line  with drug references which was released after rave reviews of live show performances. As is so often the case, after receiving criticism as subversives to American youth from the US vice-president of the time, Spiro Agnew this had the counter effect of making the song much more popular. ONCE UPON A TIME...Vehicle

IDES OF MARCH  Vehicle  (WB,1970) - Rock       With its distinctive horn part and infectious chorus, 1970’s “Vehicle” proved to be a breakout hit for the Ides of March, peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Formed in Illinois and fronted by vocalist  Jim Peterik , the group subsequently found themselves on the road with the likes of  Jimi Hendrix ,  Janis Joplin  and  Led Zeppelin . Unfortunately, “Vehicle” marked the Ides of March’s commercial peak. They broke up in 1973. ONCE UPON A TIME...Dancing In The Moonlight

Слика
KING HARVEST  Dancing In The Moonlight  (Perception,1972) - Rock        Formed in 1969, the New York band sharpened their craft locally for two years before expiring, then getting back together and moving to Paris, France. King Harvest eventually returned to New York and launched an American tour in support of their first album,  Dancing In The Moonlight  (Perception Records), which included their hit single of the same name. Those who judge King Harvest strictly on the basis of “Dancing In The Moonlight” will be quite surprised at what a smorgasbord of styles this disc offers. ONCE UPON A TIME...Looking Glass

Слика
LOOKING GLASS  Looking Glass  (Epic,1972) - Pop rock       Looking Glass was formed at Rutgers University in 1969, co-founded by guitarist/vocalist Elliot Lurie and pianist Larry Gonsky. Drummer Jeff Grob and bassist Pieter Sweval later joined, rounding out the classic lineup. Looking Glass' self-titled 1972 debut album featured the song "Brandy (You're a Fine Girl),” a breezy soft-rock track that told the story of a bartender whose “eyes could steal a sailor from the sea." The song hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in August 1972, but Looking Glass was never again able to reach such lofty heights. The group went through lineup fluctuation and name changes in 1974, before eventually disbanding in 1985. ONCE UPON A TIME...Dave Mason & Cass Elliot

Слика
DAVE MASON & CASS ELLIOT  Dave Mason & Cass Elliot  (Blue Thumb,1971) . Pop rock       Dave Mason was no stranger to the music industry when he and Cass Elliot, of The Mamas and The Papas, released their 1971 self-titled album on Blue Thumb.         From "Sit and Wonder" and "Walk To the Point," to the epic "Glittering Facade," Mason's talents for songwriting are evident throughout. Meanwhile, Elliot's lead vocals on "Here We Go Again" showcase her inimitable style and power. The backup band of Paul Harris (later of Manassas) providing keyboard and string arrangements, Bryan Garo on bass, and "The Section" sideman Russ Kunkel, also feature. ONCE UPON A TIME...Seasons In The Sun

Слика
TERRY JACKS  Seasons In The Sun  (Bell,1974) - Folk rock       Terry Jacks first made waves as a teen thanks to his band the Chessmen, who scored a couple of minor hits in Canada before he moved on to his next group, the Poppy Family. The psychedelic-pop group found international success behind tunes like “Which Way You Goin' Billy?”. By 1972, however, the Poppy Family had broken up. Jacks, who occasionally released material outside of his respective groups, began focusing on solo material. “Seasons in the Sun” reached No. 1 in the U.S. and other countries around the world, eventually selling more than 14 million copies. The Canadian singer-songwriter released a total of four studio albums between 1974 and 1987, but “Seasons in the Sun” remains his only solo hit. LITTLE DRUMMER BOY...Clive Bunker

Слика
Jethro Tull never had a bad drummer, but its founding member Clive Bunker stands out for his sense of swing and imaginative use of incidental percussion when the band was still out to play mainly jazz and blues. Listen to the Aqualung track “Up to Me,” and be impressed by the array of sounds he adds to an acoustic number.   JETHRO TULL Aqualung Chrysalis,1971 https://www.sendspace.com/file/7mvkdf

ONCE UPON A TIME...Happiness Heartaches

Слика
BRIAN AUGER'S OBLIVION EXPRESS  Happiness Heartaches  (WB,1977) - Jazz rock       The latter incarnation of Oblivion Express (led by Hammond B3 player extraordinaire Brian Auger) was characterized by soulful blues-rock, percussion, and danceable grooves. Ex-Return to Forever drummer Lenny White sets up an excellent back beat for bassist Clive Chaman (ex-Jeff Beck group) to pound steady pulses as on the funky opener “Back Street Bible Class.” Guitarist Jack Mills co-writes three pieces on the album and gives his best lead guitar solo on the title song. Lennox Langton was also an essential member of the six-piece group adding smooth conga playing on the LP’s longest track, “Spice Island.” Chaman’s funky submission, “Never Gonna Come Down,” is propelled by a Moog synthesizer lead, wah-wah guitar, and more feel-good bump and grind. Vocalist Alex Ligertwood’s lead vocal was an essential part of this line-up as well before his later stint with Santana. TRACKLIST : Back Street Bible Cla

ONCE UPON A STAR...Kites

Слика
JADE WARRIOR  Kites  (Island,1976) - Progressive rock       "Kites" went back to shorter tracks with individual titles again. It didn't make all that much difference as all of them floated together and created a continuous flow of music. The record had a kind of split-concept where the tracks on the first side was the musical description of a kite's flight through the air, while the second side was inspired by an ancient Japanese legend about the Zen Master Teh Ch'eng. It sounded like the guys had listened a bit to Mike Oldfield, as especially some tracks on the first side has sounds and moods that could have been taken straight from "Ommadawn". It even features a guest appearance from Clodagh Simmons who usually did the few vocals on Oldfield's classic albums. "Songs of the Forest" and "Wind Song" are both good examples of this. "Emperor Kite" is the band at their most Eastern-influenced, while "Kite Song" t

ONCE UPON A TIME...Cosmic Slop

Слика
FUNKADELIC  Cosmic Slop  (Westbound,1973) - Funk       And in the year of our lord 1973, the people did reject the funk. Or, at least, they took a break from it. Despite a strong start to their career on the charts, Funkadelic fell into a slump with  Cosmic Slop , a commercial flop. With the political landscape looking increasingly Nixonian, Vietnam still raging and the most space-aged album of the year,  Dark Side of the Moon , exploring the surreal with a decidedly somber bent, maybe the United States of Groove just wasn’t feeling it. Unfortunate, as not only is  Cosmic Slop  another stellar entry in a blazing opening run from George Clinton’s mad crew, but also a much more accessible album than the spiraling guitar jams and otherworldly funk that surrounded it.   HENRY COW  Western Culture  (Broadcast,1979) - Avant-prog       By the time they got to 1978 and the recording of  Western Culture , Henry Cow was in the process of breaking apart. ONCE UPON A TIME...October

Слика
CLAIRE HAMILL  October  (Island,1973) - Folk rock       Claire Hamill was a direct contemporary and label-mate of the late, but increasingly mythical, Nick Drake. Her second solo outing, October, proved her the mistress of tender bedsitter missives that still can haunt the heart. Fans of confessional songwriting should value and explore this neglected selection of artistry and craft that has stood the test of many passing seasons. ONCE UPON A TIME...Curved Air Live

Слика
CURVED AIR  Live  (BTM,1975) - Progressive rock       This is one of those solid live albums that acts almost as a 'best of' compilation. The sound is excellent considering it was recorded in 1974 and the band are well on top their game.I can't really see how you can go wrong with this. The muscianship is if of the highest order and Sonka Kristina has a passionate folksy voice that goes well with Darryl Way's violin high jinks. VOICES IN THE SKY...Ann Peebles

Слика
One of the greatest female singers of Southern soul music, Ann Peebles grew up singing gospel in her father’s Baptist choir, idolising and occasionally backing the legendary Mahalia Jackson.       Her secular music career began with an impromptu performance at the Rosewood club in Memphis in 1969, which caught the attention of famed producer Willie Mitchell of Hi Records ( Al Green ‘s label).       Alongside  Green  it was Ann who shaped the Hi soul sound with her hits;  I Can’t Stand The Rain  (1973), and  I’m Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down  (1974) – but it is her lesser-known tracks like  Trouble, Heartaches and Sadness  from her second album –  Straight From The Heart   (1971) – that best exemplify her forthright gospel-inflected country soul.       While her vocal style is similar to  Tina Turner ‘s, Ann brought with it a subtlety and fragile intensity often lacking in Turner’s phrasing, and which evoked emotion at every turn.
