  FRANK ZAPPA  Joe's Garage  (Zappa,1979) - Progressive rock       Written in three acts and released by Zappa’s custom label in two packages (one single LP, one double),  Joe’s Garage  ties the dual extremes of Frank Zappa’s sensibility closer together than ever. An attack on authoritarianism in which fascist governments, self-help pseudoreligions and the music industry are inextricably linked, the opera simultaneously tells the tale of a boy and girl. The boy, Joe, sings the title tune about his humble rock & roll band whose day of fame came and quickly went. Most of Act I is given over to the saga of Joe’s girlfriend, Mary, who moves from blowing Catholic boys in the church basement (having been tutored by the parish’s resident expert, Father Riley) to being “Crew Slut” for a touring rock group to competing in a “Wet T-Shirt Nite” contest for bus fare home, where she arrives wrecked for good.   KAYAK  Kayak II  (EMI/Harvest,1974) - Progressive rock       Kayak's second album is a great listen throughout of slightly odd melodic symphonic prog with some mild pop sensibilities. The keyboards of Ton Scherpenzeel cast endless melodies & chords progressions and the distinctive vulnerable voice of Max Werner gives the music an artistic atmosphere.         Either hated or totally loved, "Todd Rundgren's Utopia" offers for this music lover an album of wondrous progressive instrumentation and highly crafted epic tales. With 3 keyboardists at hand UTOPIA definitely takes some cosmic twists and turns here with some lovely progressive tendencies. This album offers it all... some fantastic melodies, some wild frenzied moments, lots of cosmic symphonia all encased in 3 epic tracks. Side two is essentially a 30 min epic called "The Ikon" which to this day still represents one of my many beloved epic tracks. Without a question this album showcases the more experimental side of Todd Rundgren blending in elements of Frank ZAPPA with perhaps the aura of KANSAS and bits of YES for good measure.   PETER HAMMILL Chameleon In The Shadow Of The Night  (Charisma,1973) - Progressive rock         For “Chameleon” displayed a continuation of Hammill’s inward-bound penetrations now forced to delve even deeper into stark and darkly witnessed personal apocalypses as he spun them trance-like into lyrics that wove across entire gatefolds and lyric sheets in spidery calligraphy with obsessively cryptic liner notes. Here ballads become personal outpourings of sentiments left to wriggle raw and alive in the open air from plaintive wails, violent despair and psychotic raging to the sentimental though no less emotionally painful travails of relationships lost.   INCREDIBLE STRING BAND  I Looked Up  (Elektra,1970) - Progressive folk       This album is a toss-up for Incredible String Band. On the one hand there are a couple of classic ISB songs here; but then again there are a couple of turds as well, so I guess on the balance this should be considered an average (but certainly not exceptional) album ( the album has been described by band member  Robin Williamson  as a "quickie" album).         Hamilton took up the guitar at age twelve and switched to electric bass two years later. He found himself on the East Coast and joined a band with Joe Perry named “The Jam Band.” While playing in New Hampshire, Perry and Hamilton met Steven Tyler at a show and decided to combine their respective musical projects and move to Boston in 1970. After a few personnel changes, the group officially formed the band “Aerosmith” and signed a record deal with Columbia Records in 1972.       Hamilton, a consistent member of the group, hadn’t missed an Aerosmith performance until 2006 when he was diagnosed with throat and tongue cancer. He has since undergone treatment and was able to rejoin the band for various tours and recording endeavors.   VENOM  Welcome To Hell  (Neat/Combat,1981) - Speed Metal       No NWOBHM band had less expected of them than Venom, considering what they eventually became. The uncompromising power trio of Cronos, Mantas and Abaddon saw their revolutionary musical extremity – later recognized as the very foundation of black metal – roundly and rudely dismissed by early critics and even fans, who simply couldn’t process 1981’s pivotal ‘Welcome to Hell,’ or even its signature classic “Witching Hour.” Luckily, a legion of younger bands across Europe and America (Celtic Frost, Bathory, Slayer, etc.) eventually figured it all out, and took it to the world.   WHITE SPIRIT  White Spirit  (MCA,1980) - NWOBHM       Another eventual Iron Maiden recruit, guitarist Janick Gers, was the driving force behind the short-lived but still fondly recalled White Spirit. Whereas most NWOBHM bands drank from the ale taps of Judas Priest and Motorhead, White Spirit were direct descendants of Deep Purple, with Gers paving the way with his Ritchie Blackmore-derived virtuosity, and keyboardist Malcolm Pearson playing the role of Jon Lord. The resulting LP was a refreshing departure by NWOBHM standards, but sold poorly, and the band dissolved when Gers was poached, fittingly enough, to play with Ian Gillan’s band.   APRIL WINE  Live!  (Aquarius,1974) - Rock       Live!  has a very 'live' feel to the sound that is typical of the day, and as a result there is a spontaneity and vibrancy that some live albums don't have. This gives some of the songs a freshness and a different feel so that they are almost new songs. Side 2 in particular is strong and the better of the two sides. It rocks exceptionally well. Side 1 has some great quality as well. Cat's Claw has always been a favorite April Wine song of mine, and this version adds a new edge that lends an entirely different vibe. Solid effort all around. If you like live sound, you will enjoy this. Great guitar and vocals!          You kind of get the impression from Joe Bonamassa that his position as the highest-grossing blues artist of all time is a little embarrassing – thrilling, sure, but it’s quite the affirmation.   NORMAN GREENBAUM  Spirit In The Sky  (Reprise,1969) - Rock       Norman Greenbaum’s music career originally began with Dr. West's Medicine Show and Junk Band, a novelty group for which he served as vocalist and bandleader. In the late ‘60s, he branched into folk as a solo artist. When “Spirit in the Sky” caught the ear of executives at Reprise Records, they handed Greenbaum over to producer Erik Jacobsen, who reworked the track into a thumping, psychedelic rocker. Released in December 1969, “Spirit in the Sky” became a massive hit. Greenbaum never approached the top of the chart again, coming closest with his single “Canned Ham.” He later revealed that “Spirit in the Sky” had been inspired by his love of westerns.   CARL DOUGLAS  Kung Fu Fighter  (20th Century,1974) - Disco,Funk,Soul       Douglas only released a total of three albums, the last of which came out in 1978. But “Kung Fu Fighting” has maintained a presence in pop-culture over the years, appearing in such films as  Wayne’s World 2 ,  Kung Fu Panda  and  Bowfinger . Royalties and publishing fees likely provided steady income to Douglas, who reportedly ventured into the business side of music after relocating to Germany.   STEALERS WHEEL  Stealers Wheel  (A&M,1972) - Soft rock       Y ou’ve probably discovered by now that “Stuck In The Middle With You,” the single you thought was the best Dylan record since 1966, is actually by an English group named Stealers Wheel. I found out a long time ago — for over two months now I’ve been playing Stealers Wheel constantly, and I can tell you from that prolonged experience that it’s a great little record, with songs, singing and production more inventive and better matched than practically anything else on the current shelves.   WILD CHERRY  Wild Cherry  (Epic,1976) - Funk       At the time of release, “ Play That Funky Music ” was seen as a joke on the disco movement – but all these many years later, a quick dip into this self-titled album will show you that Wild Cherry were actually the real deal – a funky combo with a hell of a way with a bassline, led by the riffing guitar and weirdly raw vocals of Robert Parissi! In a way, the group feel more like some of those blue-eyed funk combos from global scenes in the period – like Australia, Germany, or South Africa – where it maybe didn’t matter so much if you lad a long legacy in indie soul, as long as you could come up with the goods.
