  BOBBY CHARLES  Bobby Charles  (Bearsville,1972) - Folk rock        Four-fifths of the Band appear on Louisiana Cajun Bobby Charles' debut LP; he'd return the favor by appearing on  The Last Waltz . But Charles had secured his legacy long before that, penning classics like "See You Later, Alligator" and "Walking to New Orleans." On  Bobby Charles , he wades deep into the swamp rock he helped pioneer and comes out with something like modern-day Americana on songs like "Street People" and the Rick Danko cowrite "Small Town Talk.   CAPTAIN BEEFHEART  The Spotlight Kid  (Reprise,1972) - Art rock       For his sixth LP, Captain Beefheart – credited solo, even though the Magic Band are here – headed in a more mainstream direction ... relatively speaking, of course.  The Spotlight Kid  is still filled with the type of oddball touches that prevented it from making it onto any conventional radio playlists. (Though it remains Beefheart's highest-charting record in the U.S. at No. 131.) The follow-up,  Clear Spot  (also from 1972), is more acclaimed, but this bid for commercial acceptance offers a new side.         Neal Allan Doughty  is an American keyboardist, best known as a founding member of the rock band  REO Speedwagon  and the only member to have played on every album. He formed the band in the fall of 1966, with original drummer Alan Gratzer (who left REO in 1988).       Although he has never been one of REO Speedwagon's primary songwriters, Doughty has written or co-written several of the band's songs ( Sky Blues , One Lonely Night , Variety Tonight ).       His most notable playing includes the  Hammond organ  solo on "Roll with the Changes" and the  honky-tonk  piano work on " 157 Riverside Avenue ".         He was an early adopter of the  Moog synthesizer , which can be heard on the opening swoop of "Ridin' the Storm Out".   FAR EAST FAMILY BAND  Parallel World  (MU Land,1976) - Psychedelic/Space rock       Clearly the most accomplished album from the band. A summit of Japanese cosmic rock, an impressive aerial electronic cosmic spacerock with obvious Klaus Shultze influences, such as the synthe sound and the rhythmic pulse. The drum is also reminiscent of Nick Mason's play, but it's the weakest instrument on a technical level.   GNIDROLOG  Lady Lake  (RCA,1972) - Progressive rock       Originally released on vinyl in 1972, the second album from the twin brothers  Colin  (guitars, vocals, recorder, tenor sax, tenor horn), and  Stewart  (lead guitar, vocals)  Goldring ,  Peter “Mars” Cowling  (bass, cello),  Nigel Pegrum  (percussion, oboe, flute, and piano),  John Earle  (Lead Vocals on  Social Embarrassment , Soprano / Tenor / Baritone Saxophones, and flute), and  Caroline Fendrich  (piano on  Ship ) begins with their now classic piece  I Could Never Be A Soldier . Nowadays this track is considered to be among the elite works of early prog artists, not only does its message continue to be relevant, the melody is truly timeless. The second track  Ship  also grabs the listener hard and simply does not let go. Track three,  A Dog With No Collar , is something of an extreme piece for its day, it is strongly in the avant-garde realm and is a challenging listen on its own, but it is so much an integral part of the

  FRANK ZAPPA One Size Fits All  (DiscReet,1975) - Progressive rock       ZAPPA and THE MOTHERS continue to explore rhythmically intricate arrangements and observational absurdities on One Size Fits All. Similar in scope and effect to "Roxy & Elsewhere", there are complex songs that feature George Duke's dexterous vocals and Ruth Underwood's dazzling percussion ("Inca Roads", "Florentine Pogen"), comparatively conventional rock songs fettered by Frank's vocals and unleashed by his brilliant guitar work ("Po-jama People"), and even a few throwbacks to the band's semi-classical posturing ("Sofa Nos. 1 & 2" and the epic "Andy"). The supporting cast ranks with the best Frank ever had, allowing him to fade into the background on occasion and showcase the estimable talents of Duke, Underwood, Tom Fowler and Chester Thompson.   HELDON  Interface  (Cobra,1977) - Kraut/Experimental/Avant-prog       The first side of the original LP consists of several relatively short pieces, each nonetheless in the immediately identifiable Heldon style. Auger's "Les Soucoupes Volantes Vertes" and "Bal-A-Fou" both feature synth-ostinatos under which he pounds like Jaki Leibezeit on triple-dosage steroids. The thick rumble of the latter tune almost makes you forget there was no bassist in the band. Pinhas' "Jet Girl" is fairly similar to his earlier Heldon efforts in that it forsakes typical rock aggression for bleak, apocalyptic soundscapes more often identified with the industrial music that was inspired, in part, by this band. Nevertheless, Pinhas' distant, raging guitar serves fair warning that this music originates from the same psychedelic heart as many other concurrent night-trippers like Ash Ra Tempel and Hawkwind, even if the execution was completely different.       The meat

  GOBLIN  Suspiria  (Cinevox,1977) - Psychedelic rock/Soundtrack       The original’s iconic soundtrack came from  Goblin , an Italian progressive-rock outfit who brought a wild, cacophonous aesthetic to Argento’s moody mind-fuck of a film. Shoveling all manner of seemingly incompatible ideas into the blender—Baroque harpsichords, synthesizers, tabla, splatter funk, even intimations of death metal—they yielded a score even gorier, in its sticky dissonance, than Argento’s gaudily fake blood.   UTOPIA  Adventures In Utopia  (Bearsville,1979) - Progressive rock       The prog was sucked out of Utopia fairly early, but this is still one of the bands most solid offerings. This talented quartet still offers up some quality songs (indeed, only the tracks Second Nature and Love Alone are weak,) even if they have forgotten most of their prog roots. Still, Todd and Company are on their game in cranking out great songs, and if you like good music this is a good album.         It wasn’t just the yodeling or the heavy riff that made Focus’ “Hocus Pocus” a classic – it was the eight (count ‘em) short drum solos, every one electric and different.   JORGE BEN  Ben  (Philips,1972) - Samba rock       Jorge Ben was already a popular Brazilian artist when he released his ninth LP in 1972. (His 1963 debut,  Samba Esquema Novo , is an established genre classic.) Before Ben's celebrated mid-'70s run of albums, he released the lower-key  Ben , a collection of samba rock songs that equally fuses the political with the dance floor. Its closing song, the terrific "Taj Mahal," was later the subject of a copyright lawsuit when Rod Stewart's "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?" boasted a similar-sounding chorus.   KEVIN AYERS  Whatevershebringswesing  (Harvest,1972) - Psychedelic rock       Backed by members of Gong as well as former Soft Machine bandmate Robert Wyatt and pre- Tubular Bells  Mike Oldfield, Kevin Ayers' third solo album includes his regular mix of psych, prog and old-time rock 'n' roll. It's all over the place, as usual, but that's part of Ayers' appeal: an inability to stay in one place long enough to pigeonhole. The 1969 debut  Joy of a Toy  is Ayers' most essential work, but  Whatevershebringswesing  is further reaching and better suited to his quirks.   LES DUDEK  Say No More  (CBS,1977) - Blues/Southern rock       Famed studio musician and solo artist. Dudek has played with, among others, Steve Miller, Cher, Boz Scraggs, Dave Mason and Stevie Nicks. Les also played on the Allman Brothers’ album Brothers And Sisters, co-writing ‘Jessica’.       Say No More is actually his best, though probably less well known,album.   ERIC ANDERSON  Blue River  (Columbia,1972) - Folk rock       Eric Andersen was part of the Greenwich Village folk scene with Bob Dylan and Judy Collins, both of whom have recorded his songs. He'd been making records since the mid-'60s with little commercial success but finally cracked the Billboard 200 in 1972 with  Blue River . Featuring help from Dylan collaborator David Bromberg, Joni Mitchell and various Muscle Shoals and Nashville vets, the LP is an unsung gem from the key singer-songwriter era.   WALTER EGAN  Not Shy  (Polydor,1978) - Pop rock       Walter Egan moved to Los Angeles in the early ‘70s to start his career as a solo artist. He connected with  Lindsey Buckingham  and  Stevie Nicks , who would soon find stardom as members of  Fleetwood Mac . Buckingham produced Egan’s debut,  Fundamental Roll , and the 1978 follow-up  Not Shy . The latter contained the song “Magnet & Steel,” which soared to No. 8 on the Hot 100. Nicks was featured on background vocals, an interesting twist considering the song was inspired by Egan’s infatuation for her.   JIGSAW  Jigsaw  (Chelsea,1975) - Soft rock       By the time Jigsaw made its way to U.S. shores, the English band had already gone through its share of turnover. As the ‘70s dawned, three of the band’s original members had left. One of the recruits, Des Dyer, handled drums and vocals and would soon become a main co-writer of Jigsaw’s material alongside keyboardist Clive Scott. They scored a hit with “Sky High,” which peaked at No. 3 in 1975 in the U.S. The following year, they’d reach No. 30 with the song "Love Fire,” but chart success largely eluded them from there. Lineup changes continued into the early ‘80s until the group officially disbanded in 1983.         Daughter of Detroit’s acclaimed Baptist preacher, the Reverend C L Franklin, Aretha Louise Franklin was just into her twenties when she signed to  Atlantic  in November 1966, but had already experienced more than a dozen years in the music biz.       When Aretha arrived at  Atlantic Records  she immediately began recording at a heady pace. In 1967 and 1968 she released four albums –  I’ve Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You) ,  Aretha Arrives ,  Lady Soul  and  Aretha Now  – a fierce prolificacy aided by the groups of studio musicians who accompanied her – the Alabama boys at Fame in Muscle Shoals, the Dixie Flyers at Criteria in Miami, the crack New York players and a super-hot Los Angeles team.
