SCOPE  Scope  (Atlantic,1974) - Jazz/Progressive rock


     Scope was a Dutch jazz rock group that was active from 1971 to 1976. It was founded in the city of Zwolle by keyboardist/flutist Rik Elings and drummer Henk Zomer as a successor to their band Strange Power. Their compositions utilize elements of jazz as well as progressive rock combined with the prominent use of sounds that are typical of the decade such as the use of the wah-wah pedal. During their period of activity they were popular in the jazz rock scene in the Netherlands and often compared by Dutch publications to other jazz fusion groups, mostly those that originated in the United States.

        More than any other drummer, Matt Cameron laid the rhythmic foundation for the Nineties rock revolution, reconciling proggy technicality with overwhelming force. He aptly characterized his rotary-blade rhythms on the 1991 Soundgarden track "Jesus Christ Pose" as "a pure assault of the senses," but that efficient brutality wasn't necessarily characteristic of Cameron's work with the band – his drumming on  Superunknown  is as thoughtful as it is heavy, from the fluid asymmetry of "Spoonman" to the unshakeable backbeat of "Fell on Black Days." Twenty years after its release, Dave Grohl was  still raving , "Nobody played drums like Matt."   GRAVY TRAIN  Gravy Train  (Vertigo,1970) - Progressive rock       Their debut shows Gravy Train as a brave and daring underground band, heavily influenced by and derivative of other prog/hard acts of the time, yet actually trying to push the boundaries forward. Unfortunately, since the album bombed, the guys preferred to dump all the experimentation of these songs in favour of a smoother, more commercial sound later on, which totally destroyed their idiosyncrasy and forever nailed them as second-rate good-for-nothings.
