GRACIOUS!  This Is...Gracious!  (Philips,1971) - Progressive rock


       This time around, the band recorded a bit more song-oriented album, in the hope of selling a few more copies. This album got released on Philips since Vertigo rejected it. The album opens up with the incredible side-length "Super Nova". It's a four movement piece (supposed to be a five movement suite, but one of them had go on side two because it couldn't all fit on the original LP). The Mellotron hype here is totally justified as it's used on each and every cut! You'll find the whole album tends to stick more to music, rather than KING CRIMSON-like experimentations like on their debut. Yes, it's bit different from their debut, and definately more accessible, but I have a real difficult time determining which one is their better album, as their both great and essential classic prog albums, as far as I'm concerned.

LITTLE DRUMMER BOY...Matt Cameron

        More than any other drummer, Matt Cameron laid the rhythmic foundation for the Nineties rock revolution, reconciling proggy technicality with overwhelming force. He aptly characterized his rotary-blade rhythms on the 1991 Soundgarden track "Jesus Christ Pose" as "a pure assault of the senses," but that efficient brutality wasn't necessarily characteristic of Cameron's work with the band – his drumming on  Superunknown  is as thoughtful as it is heavy, from the fluid asymmetry of "Spoonman" to the unshakeable backbeat of "Fell on Black Days." Twenty years after its release, Dave Grohl was  still raving , "Nobody played drums like Matt."   GRAVY TRAIN  Gravy Train  (Vertigo,1970) - Progressive rock       Their debut shows Gravy Train as a brave and daring underground band, heavily influenced by and derivative of other prog/hard acts of the time, yet actually trying to push the boundaries forward. Unfortunately, since the album bombed, the guys preferred to dump all the experimentation of these songs in favour of a smoother, more commercial sound later on, which totally destroyed their idiosyncrasy and forever nailed them as second-rate good-for-nothings.
