BASS CULTURE...Roger Waters


     There's constant debate about the provenance of Roger Waters' bass lines-did Gilmour play them,and if so,when?-and we're normally blinded by the light of Waters' songwriting and storytelling anyway.Yet Pink Floyd would not sound like Pink Floyd without Waters' compositional skill and solid performance.Some of music's best rhythm parts only need to define and drive songs,and how can we not think about 'Money' without his opening part matching the sound of change and cash registers?And let's not forget the crazed psychedelic landscape from which Waters and the band sprouted.Acerbic,aloof,and relentlessly intellectual,you may not picture him randomly jamming with anyone,but Waters may be the sharpest avatar for the right player for the right band at the right time.

  EELA CRAIG  One Niter  (Vertigo,1976) - Prog/Symphonic rock       The album "One Niter" is the peak of Bognemayr and K.'s artistic quest. Hubert's philharmonic ambitions found a way out in the use of a gigantic keyboard arsenal. Majestic Mellotron fanfares, chorales and a string of harpsichord arpeggios greet the listener at the threshold of the 14-minute "Circles" suite. Cosmic synth landscapes shimmer in a radiant flute scale. And then the bravura leitmotif is either played out in a full-fledged rock key with an incredibly rhythmic funk addition, or hidden behind a light fairy-tale pastoral, saturated with the leader’s touching vocals. Needless to say, the imagination of the band members literally flows here, sometimes taking on rather bizarre silhouettes. According to similar canons, an ecstatic hymn is melted into a powerful fusion structure (“Loner’s Rhyme”): hard rock marries with jazz; Encouraged by  Raoul Barnett's  congas,  "Hammond"

DON'T SHOOT ME...Al Kooper

      Though his name is not well-known among fans of today's pop-rock, guitarist/keyboardist Al Kooper contributed to some of the most important recordings of '60s rock.       He taught himself to play piano and guitar in the early '50s. When rock 'n' roll took over contemporary radio, Kooper formed a doo-wop group that performed on street corners. Kooper joined the Royal Teens when he was 15 but left the group to begin writing songs and to attend college.       Among Kooper's earliest songwriting successes was the Gene Vincent hit "I Must Be Seeing Things." His biggest hit was the 1965 #1 "This Diamond Ring," which Kooper co-wrote with Bob Brass and Irwin Levine. Performed by Gary Lewis & the Playboys, the song initially was offered to the Drifters, who turned it down.       Producer Tom Wilson, Kooper's friend, arranged for him to play organ on one of the most important singles and albums in the history of rock: "Like a
