     According to the infinitely demanding Frank Zappa, Vinnie Colaiuta took "first prize" when it came to supplying complementary polyrhythms to his guitar solos "on the moment" — look no further than the intricate guitar-drum confabulations of Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar for proof. But Colaiuta is also a master of restrained finesse, in demand by everyone from Herbie Hancock to Joni Mitchell to Sting. "You're not there to show off a bunch of crap or be the center of attention," he says of his job. "You're there to blend in and be a part of it."

LITTLE DRUMMER BOY...Matt Cameron

        More than any other drummer, Matt Cameron laid the rhythmic foundation for the Nineties rock revolution, reconciling proggy technicality with overwhelming force. He aptly characterized his rotary-blade rhythms on the 1991 Soundgarden track "Jesus Christ Pose" as "a pure assault of the senses," but that efficient brutality wasn't necessarily characteristic of Cameron's work with the band – his drumming on  Superunknown  is as thoughtful as it is heavy, from the fluid asymmetry of "Spoonman" to the unshakeable backbeat of "Fell on Black Days." Twenty years after its release, Dave Grohl was  still raving , "Nobody played drums like Matt." Unfortunately, since the album bombed, the guys preferred to dump all the experimentation of these songs in favour of a smoother, more commercial sound later on, which totally destroyed their idiosyncrasy and forever nailed them as second-rate good-for-nothings.
