FIREFALL  Firefall  (Atlantic,1976) - Rock


       Their debut ploughs the fields that bands like the Eagles and Poco were sowing their seeds, mellow accomplished Country Rock which targeted both the AOR market but also hit the American singles chart. "Livin Ain't Livin" and "You Are The Woman" written by Roberts still regularly chosen for compilation albums to this day. Whilst their third single " Cinderella" had no magical ending. Larry Burnett, an unknown singer songwriter when he joined the band portrayed a young couple in love only for the lass to find she was pregnant : No happy ending as the guy kicks her out and sends her on her way. The message was picked up by feminist groups at the time and with protests made, the airplay for the single stopped and it dropped like an anchor.
     Sensitive though the band could be as shown on the excellent "Dolphin's Lullaby" which benefits from luscious sax, flute and keyboards from David Muse who would join the band fully for their next two releases.

LITTLE DRUMMER BOY...Matt Cameron

        More than any other drummer, Matt Cameron laid the rhythmic foundation for the Nineties rock revolution, reconciling proggy technicality with overwhelming force. He aptly characterized his rotary-blade rhythms on the 1991 Soundgarden track "Jesus Christ Pose" as "a pure assault of the senses," but that efficient brutality wasn't necessarily characteristic of Cameron's work with the band – his drumming on  Superunknown  is as thoughtful as it is heavy, from the fluid asymmetry of "Spoonman" to the unshakeable backbeat of "Fell on Black Days." Twenty years after its release, Dave Grohl was  still raving , "Nobody played drums like Matt."   GRAVY TRAIN  Gravy Train  (Vertigo,1970) - Progressive rock       Their debut shows Gravy Train as a brave and daring underground band, heavily influenced by and derivative of other prog/hard acts of the time, yet actually trying to push the boundaries forward. Unfortunately, since the album bombed, the guys preferred to dump all the experimentation of these songs in favour of a smoother, more commercial sound later on, which totally destroyed their idiosyncrasy and forever nailed them as second-rate good-for-nothings.
