ONCE UPON A TIME.....Bish

STEPHEN BISHOP  Bish  (ABC,1978) - Pop       Stephen Bishop's second album is so ambitious and self-assured that it's easy to overlook the chances it takes.       Stephen Bishop is well on his way, and he possesses something all his exemplars lack: a serenely nutty sense of humor. ONCE UPON A TIME.....Now Do U Wanta Dance

Слика
GRAHAM CENTRAL STATION Now Do U Wanta Dance  (WB,1977) - Funk,Soul       There is no doubt that this anything other than a strong, confident record from a band with enviable “chops” and a knack for crafting catchy floor-fillers. Starting up with the joyous acapella of “Happ-E-2-C-U-A-Ginn”, this and the later “Stomped, Beat-up and Whooped”, very like a piece of honey-dripping 50s Rock ‘n’ Roll, both turns expectations on their head.       More typically what you might expect to hear (but no less enjoyable) are tracks like the vocoder-crazed title song and the James Brown-inflected “Last Train”. These build up to the album centrepiece “Earthquake”, a real live monster slab of Funk shakedown, with explosions, Heavy Metal guitar histrionics and of course Graham’s mightily impressive flashy bass player high in the mix. It kicks heavy duty booty alright! “Have Faith In Me”, which ends the set shows their gift for a great Soul ballad, something which ...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....O Lucky Man!

Слика
ALAN PRICE  O Lucky Man!  (WB,1973) - Soundtrack     I t all works fine, including a bunch of pretty instrumentals (the lyrical piano bit on ʻPastoralʼ; the quasi-progressive piano/organ interplay on ʻArrivalʼ) and two versions of the title track that rock harder than everything else and are a little reminiscent of poppier material by The Who like ʻLong Live Rockʼ. And best of all, you really do not need any movies to enjoy it — although, admittedly, it may be worth seeing the movie if only because Price is featured in it himself, playing the role of a Greek chorus providing commentary on the action. ONCE UPON A TIME.....I'm Not Me

Слика
MICK FLEETWOOD'S ZOO  I'm Not Me  (RCA,1983) - Rock        The story behind Mick Fleetwood’s 1983  I’m Not Me  is well known. It was his second “solo” album for RCA Records, but everyone, especially Fleetwood, knew it was a band effort. Fleetwood’s name was the draw, but The Zoo was a fully formed ensemble that had been playing together for a year. This occurred because Fleetwood wanted a real group and not an album put out by studio musicians who’d come by, do their parts, and ride off to other projects.        The principal members of the Zoo were Fleetwood on drums, guitarist/singers Billy Burnette and Steve Ross, and bassist/singer George Hawkins. (Hawkins had appeared on Fleetwood’s previous release,  The Visitor ). As Burnette, Hawkins, and Ross shared lead vocal duties and co-wrote many of the songs, the band’s structure was easily compared to that of Fleetwood Mac. In addition, the album was produced by Rich...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....Rock Billy Boogie

Слика
ROBERT GORDON  Rock Billy Boogie  (RCA,1979) - Rockabilly       The presence of a few slow ballads like "Wheel of Fortune," some with surprisingly restrained string accompaniment, put this on the sophisticated side of rockabilly, which doesn't mean that it's not exciting -- just that, in the musical timewarp of his work, some of Gordon's impulses had advanced to the place that  Buddy Holly  or  Elvis Presley  had gotten to around the middle of 1958. Rock Billy Boogie is mostly kicking rock & roll with a killer beat ("Rock Billy Boogie," "Am I Blue") and welcome rescue job on one classic ("Black Slacks"), spiced with a few slowies and one country ballad (Johnny Burnette's "Walk on By" revived), plus one superb original ("I Just Met a Memory"), and there's not a bad song, or even a less-than-first-rate performance anywhere on it. ONCE UPON A TIME.....Together

Слика
FAME & PRICE  Together  (CBS,1971) - Rock,R&B,Jazz       The partnership between  Alan Price  and  Georgie Fame  began on a November night in 1970 at the London Revolution Club.  As Georgie Fame began to strike up the old Animals classic “Bring It on Home”, it was all over for the former Animals organist Alan Price. When Georgie – who recognized Alan Price in the audience- invited him to come onstage, he readily took up his offer. Both delivered a rock show to a stunning crowd, one that people seldom experience. Songs such as “Rave On,” “Great Balls of Fire,” and “Oh Boy “ were full of energy and the entire club was electrified with excitement.       Continuing this partnership was a logical consequence. Whoever limits this collaboration to their smash hit “Rosetta” is making a big mistake. “Together” proves that this duo has so much more to offer. TRACKLIST : Rosetta           ...

BASS CULTURE.....Michael Anthony

Слика
Michael Anthony may be the biggest team player in hard rock history: backing up David Lee Roth with his powerhouse vocal harmonies and supporting the Van Halen brothers with his criminally underrated bass skills, often tasked with carrying their classic songs' melodies while Edward was wailing away, just being Edward. ONCE UPON A TIME.....Firefall

Слика
FIREFALL  Firefall  (Atlantic,1976) - Rock         T heir debut ploughs the fields that bands like the Eagles and Poco were sowing their seeds, mellow accomplished Country Rock which targeted both the AOR market but also hit the American singles chart. "Livin Ain't Livin" and "You Are The Woman" written by Roberts still regularly chosen for compilation albums to this day. Whilst their third single " Cinderella" had no magical ending. Larry Burnett, an unknown singer songwriter when he joined the band portrayed a young couple in love only for the lass to find she was pregnant : No happy ending as the guy kicks her out and sends her on her way. The message was picked up by feminist groups at the time and with protests made, the airplay for the single stopped and it dropped like an anchor.       Sensitive though the band could be as shown on the excellent "Dolphin's Lullaby" which benefits from luscious sax, flute and keyboards from ...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....Flat As A Pancake

Слика
HEAD EAST  Flat As A Pancake  (Pyramid,1975) - Hard rock/AOR       Flat as a Pancake  showcases all that made  Head East  a consistent draw on the arena circuit and stands the test of time as a damn good ‘70’s AOR album.  Even better than that, it kicks off with one of the great, lost 70’s melodic rock songs, “Never Been Any Reason.”  Sure,  Head East  never threatened the charts too seriously, but “Never Been Any Reason” and “Love Me Tonight,” did crack the charts and  Flat as a Pancake  went gold. ONCE UPON A TIME.....Nightmares And Other Tales From The Vinyl Jungle

J.GEILS BAND  Nightmares...  (Atlantic,1974) - Rock       The J. Geils Band are like painters doing variations on the same sight or model, attempting to refine their vision until there is nothing left to add or subtract. With  Nightmares ... and Other Tales from the Vinyl Jungle , they may have finally finished their painting. At the very least, they are writing an American version of street talk, grownup nursery rhymes and nonsense, while playing an American version of the rock & roll blues. ONCE UPON A TIME.....Garcia

Слика
JERRY GARCIA  Garcia  (WB,1972) - Folk/Psychedelic rock       One thing you have to say about Jerry Garcia -- he sure does work a lot! In fact, considering the multitude of duties which being a mainstay of the Grateful Dead and part-time guitarist with Howard Wales' group must impose on him, it's hard to imagine where Garcia found the time and energy to do this solo album. The songs, written by Jerry in collaboration with Billy Kreutzmann and Robert Hunter, are very much in the style of recent Dead compositions -- rocking country-blues numbers. Save for "Late for Supper," which is an otherworldly electronic attempt, any one of them could have been tacked onto the  American Beauty  package. In other words, they're not downright country as the songs on  Workingman's Dead ,  but pretty nearly. Garcia takes his customary delight in being able to pump the pedal steel for all it's worth and sings with the sort of carefree diligence which h...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....Dog Days

ONCE UPON A TIME.....Somewhere I've Never Travelled

Слика
AMBROSIA  Somewhere I've Never Travelled  (20th Century Fox,1976) - Progressive rock       One of the most interesting and ambitious newer groups out of L.A. delivers a fascinating, fine-textured work that is truly like a close-up into one of the most intriguing collective minds in today's music. Ambrosia is one of the few groups that has mastered the technique of being both far-out galactic in scope of vision and mainstream AM commercial in execution. The seemingly crystal-clear production of Alan Parsons is a vital element of this sound, it would seem. All four members of the group write songs and sing leads, yet Ambrosia has a cohesive and distinctive style no matter which combination of personnel is providing the material. There is an unusual dreamlike quality that pervades its work. The songs seem to be reaching the listener direct from some strange and beautiful realm of the unconscious. It is an experience rare in popular music today or at any time...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....Batteaux

Слика
BATTEAUX  Batteaux  (Columbia,1973) - Folk,Rock,Funk         Batteaux  is a long treasured and notoriously under appreciated 70’s underground folk-funk classic. The only release by the Batteau brother duo is a perfect mix of balearic blue eyed soul and west coast country rock. Admirers old and new have been constantly pondering, why wasn’t this better known? The record had all the ingredients for commercial success. It was released on Columbia in ’73, features virtuoso guest players including Tom Scott, John Guerin, and Andy Newmark, as well as incredible songwriting and musicianship from the Batteau brothers themselves. ONCE UPON A TIME.....Phil Seymour

Слика
PHIL SEYMOUR  Phil Seymour  (Boardwalk,1980) - Power pop       As half of the Dwight Twilley group, drummer-singer-songwriter Seymour helped create two of the greatest albums of the late-70s power-pop renaissance, "Sincerely" and "Twilley Don't Mind." After departing from the group, Seymour did some woodshedding with Tom Petty (those are his backing vocals on "American Girl" and "Breakdown," for example), 20/20 and Moon Martin before signing with Neil Bogart's Boardwalk Records for this 1980 debut.       The Beatleisms that Seymour shared with Twilley are still here, but the Sun-styled slap-back sound has been updated to a mix more reflective of '70s pop-rockers like The Raspberries and Plimsouls. Seymour's writing (along with contributions from Twilley and Bill Pitcock IV) lived up to the standards of his two albums with Twilley, and Richard Polodor's production captures all of the band's chiming goodness.
