ONCE UPON A TIME.....X-Static

Слика
HALL & OATES  X-Static  (RCA,1979) - Rock, Pop        With X-STATIC, their 1979 album, Hall and Oates got caught in the middle of a raging battle between disco and rock. They started incorporating ceratin elements of disco into their sound; however, contrary to popular belief, X-STATIC is not a disco album. It's a combination of disco and their signature rock 'n soul music. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It's kind of like a mixed bag.        But X-STATIC does have its moments. The first several songs, "The Woman Comes and Goes," "Wait For Me," "Portable Radio," "All You Want Is Heaven," and "Who Said the World Is Fair," are all standouts, proving that Daryl and John can write some great songs.        But from the sixth track "Running From Paradise," its title says it all. A silly, unfocused dud, it is the worst song on the album, and, things start to fall apart from then on. It's a dry spel...

DON'T SHOOT ME.....Art Neville

Слика
His career technically began as a 17-year-old in 1954, when he was a member of a school band called the Hawketts that recorded a cover of “Mardi Gras Mambo.”         From there, Neville would help elevate New Orleans funk to an entirely new level. In an eight-year stretch between 1969 and 1977, Neville and the Meters (formerly known as Art Neville & the Neville Sounds) dropped eight albums. Their best known songs were “Cissy Strut,” “Fire on the Bayou” and “Hey Pocky A-Way.”       But the Meters grew frustrated with their lack of mainstream success. And like so many acts before and after them, that frustration (and drug usage) led the group to disband. It didn’t take long, though, for Neville to begin the next chapter of his career. Along with his three brothers, Aaron, Charles and Cyril, and their uncle George “Jolly” Landry, they formed the Neville Brothers in 1977. And like the Meters before them, they were beloved bo...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....Clearlight Symphony

Слика
CLEARLIGHT  Clearlight Symphony  (Virgin,1975) - Progressive rock       It is the first in a series of albums by a project led by pianist  Cyrille Verdeaux  with the participation of other musicians, including in this case three members of  Gong .       Primarily  psychedelic , but also serving as a forerunner of  new-age music , the album's musical style manages to blend seemingly contrary elements: the  symphonic rock  concept is flexible enough to permit extensive  jamming  in both  rock  and  jazz fusion  styles. ONCE UPON A TIME.....Saga

Слика
SAGA  Saga  (Polydor,1978) - Progressive rock        Saga was coming onto the scene as the popularity of prog-rock was winding down. Disco and new wave were already grabbing people’s attention, so it isn’t difficult to understand why they incorporated these sounds into their music. And hey, objectively speaking, it did work. This album didn’t make a dent on any chart, but it was a solid first step toward beginning a decades-long career. TRACKLIST : How Long                        Humble Stance                        Climbing The Ladder                        Will It Be You (Chapter IV)                        Perfectionist                        Give'em The...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....The Big Lad In The Windmill

Слика
IT BITES  The Big Lad In The Windmill  (Virgin,1986) - Progressive rock      This is their first album, a nice debut for a British prog band who started in the mid 80's! The songs may be quite hard rock, if you consider the rather aggressive omnipresent electric guitar. The tracks are loaded, and the lead vocals are excellent, reminding me Derek Shulman of Gentle Giant and Peter Gabriel, seconded by TONS of excellent backing vocals, giving the ensemble an American pop sound. TRACKLIST : I Got You Eating Out Of My Hand                       All In Red                       Whole New World                       Screaming On The Beaches                       Wanna Shout!                     ...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....Explorer

Слика
EXPLORER  Explorer  (X,1982) - Electronic       Tony Carey is a keyboard whiz originally from California most famous for his work as keyboardist in the 1970s band Rainbow (alongside Ritchie Blackmore and Ronnie James Dio) up to 1977. He then had a solo career with multiple charting records under his own name. In the mid-late 1970’s, he moved Germany and began working in Peter Hauke’s studio. Influenced by what Tony referred to as “euro-electronica”, the product of enlightening sessions became “Explorer”. TRACKLIST : Enjaw J                          Transit To Nowhere                          No. 8                          Megawar                          Queen Of Scots         ...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....Aerie Faerie Nonsense

Слика
ENID  Aerie Faerie Nonsense  (EMI,1977) - Progressive rock       Even with new trends taking hold, The Enid managed to somehow make it out unscathed with their classical aesthetic whilst denying any connections with the progressive rock genre, preferring to be classified strictly as “progressive music”. With  Aerie Faerie Nonsense , the term truly has meaning, further using classical elements to progress music as a whole, even if it went largely ignored outside their homeland. Despite not being as gripping with its concept, the album was a welcome change in sound, not only showing the band had some more tricks up their sleeves, but were still developing as a unit. TRACKLIST : Prelude                        Mayday Gilliard                        Ondine                       ...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....Flags

Слика
MORAZ & BRUFORD  Flags  (EG,1985) - Progressive rock       The first side of the LP is split between prog and jazz.  Temples Of Joy , a piece from Moraz' 3rd, self titled solo album, opens the record. It is a pure symphonic prog piece.  Impromptu, Too!  and  Flags , both with piano & synth, are also on the proggy side.  Split Second  and  Karu  are jazzier, but both fine works.       The second side is much more experimental, but even better than the first side.  Machines programmed By Genes  begins with spacy synth sounds, but develops into an almost hip-hop rhythm, while keeping the adventurous sound.       After a drum solo based on a Max Roach solo, the album concludes with three fusiony songs, where the synths keep the sound firmly in a prog realm. LITTLE DRUMMER BOY.....Roger Taylor

Слика
Drummer of the champions, Roger Taylor holds an esteemed place in the music world. As the drummer and backing vocalist for the iconic rock band Queen, Taylor achieved international fame with his remarkable talent and unique sound.       Taylor’s contributions to Queen extend far beyond his drumming. He played a significant role as a songwriter and singer, composing at least one track on every Queen album.       Some of the things that Taylor is most renowned for are his ability to tune his drums to a distinct sound and his skills as a vocalist, including his impressive falsetto range.       Taylor has also collaborated with numerous artists and enjoyed a successful solo career, releasing six albums. His versatility as a musician and his ability to seamlessly transition between genres have solidified his reputation as a musical force. ONCE UPON A TIME.....McCartney

Слика
PAUL McCARTNEY  McCartney  (Apple,1970) - Rock,Lo-Fi       It's quite obvious that the best element of the Beatles has been isolated and defined at last by  McCartney,  a well-paced program of 13 disarmingly simple tunes on which Paul plays all the instruments and on most of which he sings (with wife Linda harmonizing on occasion). The fare includes hard rock ("Oo You"), subtle ballads ("Junk"), soul ("Maybe I'm Amazed") and instrumentals ("Momma Miss America"). There isn't an arbitrary note or a cheap sentiment anywhere and Paul -- despite his lack of virtuosity -- is fully in control of each instrument he essays. ONCE UPON A TIME.....Headkeeper

Слика
DAVE MASON  Headkeeper  (Blue Thumb,1972) - Rock       Mark Jordan's electric piano works and Mason's electric guitar solos are very sharp on the half-studio half-live  Headkeeper,  and a version of Mason's Traffic classic "Feelin' Alright" cooks. TRACKLIST : To Be Free                        In My Mind                        Here We Go Again                        A Heartache,A Shadow,A Lifetime                        Headkeeper                        Pearly Queen                        Just A Song                        World In Ch...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....Souvenirs

Слика
DAN FOGELBERG  Souvenirs  (Epic,1974) - Soft rock      Very pretty set from singer/songwriter, with acoustic sounds predominating. Help from the likes of Joe Walsh, Graham Nash and various members of the Eagles, with over-all sound coming closest to an Eagles/Southern Hillman Furay style. Country flavor on some of the cuts, just plain soft music on the majority of them. Fogelberg has been around for some time and is slow on releasing LPs but ones of this quality prove well worth waiting for. Chance for a hit single on some of the more uptempo material. TRACKLIST : Part Of The Plan                          Illinois                          Changing Horses                          Better Change                     ...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....Little Criminals

Слика
RANDY NEWMAN  Little Criminals  (WB,1977) - Rock       What  Little Criminals  showcases are not songs, but arrangements, plus the contributions of various members of the Eagles. The arrangements are good—particularly with "Jolly Coppers" and "Baltimore," not to mention the dreamy bandbox sound on "Sigmund Freud's Impersonation of Albert Einstein in America"—but they're good in limbo; the music fails to bring out Newman's lyrics and his singing, because both are so limited. "Baltimore" is clearly meant as a statement about The Death of an American City, but there isn't a detail in it that has anything to do with Baltimore. Where is Newman's eye for the specific, the eye that picked out the little fat man next to Calvin Coolidge in "Louisianna 1927"? TRACKLIST : Short People                           You Can't Fool The Fat Man                 ...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....Streetlights

Слика
BONNIE RAITT Streetlights  (WB,1974) - R&B       Raitt gets contemplative and doesn’t let up.  Streetlights  is produced with a heavier hand than her other albums, with strings that sometimes complement her voice but more often distract from it. TRACKLIST : The Song About The Midway                          Rainy Day Man                          Angel From Montgomery                          I Got Plenty                          Streetlights                          What Is Success                          Ain't Nobody Home           ...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....E Pluribus Funk

Слика
GRAND FUNK RAILROAD  E Pluribus Funk  (Capitol,1971) - Rock       It's really amazing how Funk keeps coming up with new material since this is their sixth album in about two years. This album shows some fine writing talent and also the quality of the recording is much better than on  Survival.  On this album it's much easier to distinguish the leads -- they don't just sound like a bunch of noise and distortion. TRACKLIST : Footstompin' Music                       People, Let's Stop The war                       Upsetter                       I Come Tumblin'                       Save The Land                       No Lies               ...

VOICES IN THE SKY...Billie Davis

Слика
Billie Davis's career started like many other of the female singers of her time. At the young age of 16 she entered a local talent contest at Southall Community  Centre .  After winning she was advised by Cliff Bennett to go and see a man named Joe Meek.  Billie worked on various experimental recordings and also worked on her own vocal. It was while working with Meek that she was spotted by Robert Stigwood and instantly snapped up. This was the start of her journey into fame.       H er first hit 'Tell Him' sent Billie up the British charts,  With her Jet Black hair, Big doe eyes and vampy and unique cloths style Billie was was of the earliest images of the 60'S Brit scene. Certainly a muse for the tabloids too. The heavy promotion for 'Tell Him' had Billie performing and touring with mega acts The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, to name a few.         Billie enjoyed a great build up of success with ...

ONCE UPON A TIME...If I Could Only Remember My Name

Слика
DAVID CROSBY  If I Could Only Remember My Name  (Atlantic,1971) - Psychedelic folk       Forgotten by rock history, and probably by most of its participants, this 1971 curio is a one-of-a-kind freak-folk apogee. It's a solo album in name only, since the Croz operates as a cosmic cruise director, bringing in pals like Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Jerry Garcia and Grace Slick. In hydroponic jams like "What Are Their Names," you can hear each guest wander into the studio, plug in, play a few licks, sing a few harmonies ("Peace is not an awful lot to ask" -- dig it!) and raid the fridge. Garcia steals the show, and the two killer tracks are the ones where he burns on guitar, playing in a dark "Wharf Rat" mood: "Song With No Words (Tree With No Leaves)," where Garcia cuts Jorma Kaukonen in a guitar duel, and "Laughing," featuring Jerry's profoundly sad pedal steel.
