ONCE UPON A TIME.....Hats Of Glass

Слика
EELA CRAIG  Hats Of Glass  (Vertigo,1978) - Prog/Art rock       This third album (1978) is the successor of the highly acclaimed One Niter (1976), a treat for the vintage keyboard aficionados, from Hammond and Mellotron to Minimoog and Hohner clavinet, a real Austrian symphonic rock gem! The line-up still features the 3 keyboard players but one of them, Frits Riedelberger does now also some lead vocals, and Eela Craig welcomes a new member, singer Will Orthofer. TRACKLIST : A Spaceman Came Travelling                       Hats Of Glass                       Chances Are                       Heaven Sales                       Holstenwall Fair                       Caught On The Air ...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....Communication

Слика
JUNIPHER GREENE Communication  (ON,1973) - Progressive rock      A fter a good debute 2 years earlier, tha band that was a quintet , remains on this album a trio, but they manage to pull a realy solid heavy prog album all the way. reminescent of Host, Uriah Heep with some psychedelic touches, Communication was for many a step down from the debute, I wonder why because to me was a nice surprice and a pleasent listning. The title track for instance is excellent, nearly 13 min of great musicianship and good ideas , like it was in the glory days of prog. A fairly good album, while is nothing groundbreaking or innovative here, this second and aswell their swansong worth to be investigated. ONCE UPON A TIME.....Divergence

Слика
SOLUTION  Divergence  (Harvest,1972) - Prog/Jazz rock        Solution's second outing "Divergence" sees the band replacing the eclectic, innovative excursions on their debut with a smoother variety of jazz rock. Competent and accomplished musicians add a number of refined, subtle details to the proceedings to elevate it above the plain and ordinary, and occasionally the band showcases an inclination towards a more experimental expression. But by and large this disc appears to have the jazz rock crowd as its key audience, and in particular the section of it that doesn't mind an occasional flirt with mainstream oriented music. DON'T SHOOT ME.....Doug Ingle

Слика
Douglas Lloyd Ingle   was an American musician, best known as the founder, organist, primary composer and lead vocalist for the band  Iron Butterfly .  He wrote the band's hit song " In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida ", which was first released in 1968, and was the last surviving member of the band’s 1967–1969 lineup.       After Iron Butterfly broke up in 1971, Ingle toured occasionally with his former band members, but was not involved with either of Iron Butterfly's later two albums.       Ingle had a short stint with the pop group Stark Naked and the Car Thieves in the early 1970s after he left Iron Butterfly. ONCE UPON A TIME.....Hot Tamale Baby

Слика
MARCIA BALL  Hot Tamale Baby  (Rounder,1985) - Blues      A n irresistible celebratory blend of rollicking, two-fisted New Orleans piano, Louisiana swamp rock and smoldering Texas blues from a contemporary storyteller. TRACKLIST : Never Like This Before                         I'm Gonna Forget About You                         Love's Spell                         I Don't Know                         Hot Tamale Baby                         That's Enough Of That Stuff                         Don't You Know I Love You                         Anot...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....Give Me The Night

Слика
GEORGE BENSON  Give Me The Night  (WB,1980) - Jazz,Funk,Soul       Give Me the Night positively glides. Jazz critics suggested that Benson was reduced to a bit part player on his own album, but that misses the point; here was a player who’d worked with the likes of  Miles Davis  and  Herbie Hancock  enjoying some of pop’s limelight. This album also was the only significant time that Benson and Quincy Jones worked together. It would have been marvellous to think what may have happened had they continued, but what the union left behind is really rather special. TRACKLIST :     Love X Love                           Off Broadway                           Moody's Mood                           Give Me The Night       ...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....Rising Hell

Слика
FATBACK BAND  Rising Hell  (Event,1975) - Funk/Soul       Raising Hell forms part of the Fatback Band’s prolific mid-70s output. Still ahead of them was 1979’s King Tim III (Personality Jock), the first commercially available rap record, and I Found Lovin’ from 1984, the white sock soul anthem. But Raising Hell captures most of their eclectic, if occasionally misfiring magic. TRACKLIST : (Are You Ready) Do The Bus Stop                        All Day                        Put Your Love (In My Tender Care)                        Groovy Kind Of Day                        Spanish Hustle                        I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)   ...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....Do It ('Til You're Satisfied)

Слика
B.T. EXPRESS  Do It ('Till You're Satisfied)  (Scepter,1974) - Soul/Funk       Do It ('Til You're Satisfied) features two million sellers by the New York natives; the title track and "Express" are funky, irresistible disco gems. Produced by  Jeff Lane  and mixed by  Tom Moulton , the two dancefloor classics features hypnotic basslines, handclaps on alternate beats, and the coolest congas on the planet, all combined with masterfully mixed guitars, saxophones, flutes, strings,  Barbara Joyce Lomas ' blaring lead, Louis Risbrooks' bass vocal retorts, and  Richard Thompson 's support vocals. Lane was never able to repeat the tightness of the two tracks on subsequent albums or even on this one. "If I Don't Turn You On" and "Do You Like It" come close, but "Once You Get It," "Do It," "This House Is Smoking," and "Mental Telepathy" do not. Good, because of the two classics, but a great...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....Time Moves On

Слика
STRUTT  Time Moves On  (Brunswick,1976) - Funk/Disco       This is a tight, competent set of funk from Strutt, the band seemed to vanish without a blip after this album’s title track, “ Time Moves On “, went all the way to number one on the disco chart in 1976 .  Also includes “ Said you didn’t love him ” a wicked 70’s crossover monster with killer bridge in the middle, “ Funky baby feet ” and instrumentals full of organ swipes and horn blasts. TRACKLIST : Time Moves On                         Said You Didn't Love Him                         Front Row Romeo (instr.)                         We've Come A Long Way Baby                         Funky Sign                   ...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....Do You Wanna Go Party

Слика
K.C. & The SUNSHINE BAND  Do You Wanna Go Party  (TK,1979) - Funk/Disco       The slight shifts in rhythmic and compositional strategy are dubious. But this band is like the Ramones--the hooks sneak up on you. What can I say? Not only do I love the title cut, but I find myself humming everything else on the record--the slow one, the cover version, the one in Spanish. TRACKLIST : Hooked On Your Love                          I've Got The Feeling                          Ooh, I Like It                          Please Don't Go                          I Betcha Didn't Know That                          Que Pasa?       ...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....People Call You Crazy

Слика
MICK FARREN  People Call You Crazy: The Story Of Mick Farren  (Castle,2003) - Psychedelic rock       While many British rock bands were turning to love, peace and harmony in '67, Farren's Deviants were heading into bleaker proto-punk territory with MC5-style garage psychedelia. This package features tracks from the band's defiant debut Ptooff! (one of the first independently made and distributed British rock albums, selling 10,000 copies before Decca picked it up), '68's methadone-fuelled Disposable, and their '69 swan song, No 3. When the band split later that year (the remnants mutating into The Pink Fairies), Farren went on to be a solo artist, the editor of anti-establishment publication IT, and producer of the comic Nasty Tales. ONCE UPON A TIME.....Mountains

STEAMHAMMER Mountains  (B&C,1970) - Prog/Hard rock       If you like early ’70s progressive blues then this album will be right up your street as it is a consistently strong and vibrant album. ONCE UPON A TIME.....The Flock

Слика
FLOCK  The Flock  (Columbia,1969) - Jazz/Prog rock       Columbia Records seemed to have a hankering for these brassy rock bands with complex arrangements and jazz-fusion arrangements back in the late sixties and early seventies. Among the biggest were Chicago and Santana (San Francisco), as well as Weather Report, Steely Dan and Blood, Sweat & Tears from New York, most if not all of them inspired by the likes of Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie but with a firm grounding in rock sensibilities and showmanship as well. The Flock never achieved the same level of recognition as any of these bands, but managed to crank out a couple of pretty decent albums before fracturing with the departure of violinist Jerry Goodman for Mahavishnu Orchestra. ONCE UPON A TIME.....Zagara

Слика
SUNBIRDS  Zagara  (Finger/Polydor,1973) - Jazz/Progressive rock       fter a stunning debut LP, the second Sunbirds LP takes a different musical direction. Now the band is going towards a softer jazzy world fusion -already present on the first LP. The psychedelic influences are gone in favor of a much more predictable, almost easy listening style. Don't get me wrong, it's very pleasant and a nice travel through time but not (very) progressive and inventive anymore, TRACKLIST : Fire Dance                       Homecoming                       Ocean Song                       Stillpointing                       Zagara                       My Dear Groovin         ...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....Jumbo

Слика
GROBSCHNITT  Jumbo  (Brain,1975) - Krautrock,Prog rock        With bassist Wolfgang "Pepe" Jäger now in tow, this is to be considered Grobschnitt's "classic" lineup. Any traces of cosmic "Krautrock" sound were pretty much behind them, this is pure symphonic rock with a comic twist. It's hard to think of another sympho-prog band with their tongue pressed so far into their cheek, "The Excursion of Father Smith" is one of the wackiest "prog epics" ever recorded. "Clown" likewise features moments of great whimsy in the comical background vocal parts. The B-side is a tad more sedate, with the folk-tinged "Dream And Reality" and the moody "Sunny Sunday's Sunset" taking up the bulk of the space, though the comical farewell track, "Auf Wiedersehen" makes sure they're still offering a nod and a wink. TRACKLIST : Jupp                       The Excursion Of Father Smith           ...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....Deluge

Слика
MICHAEL KAROLI & POLLY ELTES Deluge  (Spoon,1984) - Krautrock       A hard album describe because it crosses so many non-Western, tropical-musical territories – “Fear of Losing Control” and “One Thing (Or The Other)” gives you that taste. But then, when it doesn’t it, like it will in “The Lake” and “Deluge (The River)” it sounds like esoteric Pop that is as much new age sojourn as it is wigged-out  King Tubby -like “roots” exploration.       Deluge  acknowledges how far “alternative” music had changed since CAN’s beginning during the glam and krautrock era – obvious nods to post-punk, reggae, electro, and new wave make their presence heard for a reason – yet presents many ideas that were so ridiculously out of step, for that generation, that perhaps a future generation (not entirely theirs) might be more pliable to “get”. VOICES IN THE SKY.....Billie Holiday

Слика
Born Eleanora Fagan on 7 April 1915 and abandoned by her parents as a baby, former teenage prostitute Billy Holiday’s troubled upbringing in 1920’s Maryland remains pivotal to one of the greatest jazz voices of the 20th century.       At 22 she joined Count Basie and his band but had a row and was fired a year later. Then she joined bandleader Artie Shaw.       Billie embarked on a musical career that was dogged by personal turmoil, including heroin addiction and an abusive marriage to a Mafia enforcer.       In 1959, she collapsed after two numbers at a Greenwich Village concert and went into hospital with cardiac failure and liver problems.       Lady Day, as she was known, died on 17 July 1959 at the age of 44, leaving behind a legacy of performances that mirrored a lifetime of drugs, violence and heartache.  The official cause of death was listed as lung congestion complicated by heart failur...
