ONCE UPON A TIME.....Deluge

     A hard album describe because it crosses so many non-Western, tropical-musical territories – “Fear of Losing Control” and “One Thing (Or The Other)” gives you that taste. But then, when it doesn’t it, like it will in “The Lake” and “Deluge (The River)” it sounds like esoteric Pop that is as much new age sojourn as it is wigged-out King Tubby-like “roots” exploration.
     Deluge acknowledges how far “alternative” music had changed since CAN’s beginning during the glam and krautrock era – obvious nods to post-punk, reggae, electro, and new wave make their presence heard for a reason – yet presents many ideas that were so ridiculously out of step, for that generation, that perhaps a future generation (not entirely theirs) might be more pliable to “get”.

LITTLE DRUMMER BOY...Matt Cameron

        More than any other drummer, Matt Cameron laid the rhythmic foundation for the Nineties rock revolution, reconciling proggy technicality with overwhelming force. He aptly characterized his rotary-blade rhythms on the 1991 Soundgarden track "Jesus Christ Pose" as "a pure assault of the senses," but that efficient brutality wasn't necessarily characteristic of Cameron's work with the band – his drumming on  Superunknown  is as thoughtful as it is heavy, from the fluid asymmetry of "Spoonman" to the unshakeable backbeat of "Fell on Black Days." Twenty years after its release, Dave Grohl was  still raving , "Nobody played drums like Matt."   GRAVY TRAIN  Gravy Train  (Vertigo,1970) - Progressive rock       Their debut shows Gravy Train as a brave and daring underground band, heavily influenced by and derivative of other prog/hard acts of the time, yet actually trying to push the boundaries forward. Unfortunately, since the album bombed, the guys preferred to dump all the experimentation of these songs in favour of a smoother, more commercial sound later on, which totally destroyed their idiosyncrasy and forever nailed them as second-rate good-for-nothings.
