ONCE UPON A TIME...No Man's Land

Слика
HOLOCAUST  No Man's Land  (Phoenix,1984) - NWOBHM       After a short hiatus, John Mortimer (guitar) reformed the band and recorded some newly written material, titling the resulting album No Man’s Land (1984).  At worst, it’s a perfunctory, half hearted run through familiar Holocaust tropes.  At best it’s confirmation that it was time for a break. TRACKLIST : No Man's Land                        We Will Rock And We Will Roll                        No Time Left                        Let's Go                        On The Ropes                        Satellite City                        Powe...

ONCE UPON A TIME...Fistful Of Metal

Слика
ANTHRAX  Fistful Of Metal  (Megaforce, 1983) - Thrash metal         “Fistful of Metal” may not be the *absolute* essential album of the genre or the band, but it’s as worthy of a listen as anything else Anthrax or The Big 4 (Slayer, Metallica, Megadeath, Judas Priest) has released. There are no bad songs, so I won’t pick any standouts, and it’s a shame the band doesn’t play more from it. BUT You can always catch Neil’s band Deathriders, who perform several songs from it, and you can still hear the same power in his voice today, if not even stronger. Still a classic, and completely underrated. TRACKLIST : Deathrider                        Metal Thrashing Mad                        I'm Eighteen                        Panic               ...

BASS CULTURE...Eddie Jackson

Слика
Bands are like a team sport and complementing the other’s talents ultimately yields the best results. Queensryche have been responsible for making huge strides in the early progressive metal genre and Eddie Jackson’s contributions are irreplaceable. His bass playing works in and out of melodies, both vocal and guitar, and ‘Ed Bass’ also serves as a key backing singer. ONCE UPON A TIME...Back Up Against The Wall

Слика
ATLANTA RHYTHM SECTION Back Up Against The Wall (Decca,1973) - Southern rock        Originally hired as an engineering assistant at Studio One, Ronnie Hammond had also provided back-up vocals on many of the group's recording sessions. With those credentials (and as the owner of a great voice), he was subsequently brought in as Justo's replacement.  In spite of the personnel shake-up,1972's Buddy Buie produced "Back Up Against the Wall" proved more consistent and rock-oriented than the debut. Exemplified by tracks like 'Cold Turkey Tenn.', their cover of Joe South's 'Redneck' and the boogie rock title track, Hammond's likeable voice proved a nice match for the band's blend of pop, blues and Southern rock moves. While nothing here was particularly original, the performances were all professional and worth a couple of spins. TRACKLIST : Wrong                     Cold Turkey,Tenn.     ...

ONCE UPON A TIME...Subtle As A Flying Mallet

Слика
DAVE EDMUNDS  Subtle As A Flying Mallet  (RCA,1975) - Rock'n'roll       I n 1975, Edmunds released "Subtle as a Flying Mallet" where he literally orchestrated the whole thing himself with a little help from his friends from Rockpile. This wasn't his best effort, and later Edmunds mentions that this release lacked continuity, but he's not embarrassed by it. Even with the Everly Brother's, Spector and Berry tunes; it does unfortunately, leaves one yawning. But the music isn't poorly done, not at all, you just need to be in the mood to listen to it. TRACKLIST : Baby, I Love You                    Leave My Woman Alone                    Maybe                    Da Doo Ron Ron                    Let It Be Me                 ...

ONCE UPON A TIME...Nite Flights

Слика
WALKER BROTHERS  Nite Flights  (GTO,1978) - Art pop       The four tracks Scott contributed to the Walker Brothers final album represent the pivotal moment in his discography, the hinge that connects Scott Walker the faded 60’s pop star to latter-day  avant  Scott. The album itself was a contract filler, recorded in 1978 when the Walker Brother’s reunion had worn out a brief mid-decade welcome. They could have hashed out a few covers and called it quits, instead they each decided to make their own mini album. In Scott’s case the results were all the more enthralling for the years of artistic near-dormancy that preceded them. Suddenly, here was the supreme command, the auteur’s precision and dark drama that had characterised the quartet of records that had seen him become the toast of late ‘60s British pop, only to overreach and fall precipitously from grace. ONCE UPON A TIME...Stranger In The City

Слика
JOHN MILES  Stranger In The City  (London,1977) - Rock       During the summer of 1976, John Miles was touring, supporting both Jethro Tull and the Rolling Stones. Despite what was a gruelling touring schedule, John Miles still found time to begin work on his sophomore album, Stranger In The City.       Despite the success of Rebel, Alan Parsons didn’t return to produce Stranger In The City. Instead, singer-songwriter Rupert Holmes took charge of producing John Miles’ newly expanded band.       Reviews of Stranger In The City had been mostly positive. The occasional critic wasn’t convinced that Stranger In The City was as cohesive an album as Rebel. It was a much more eclectic album, with everything from pop to blue eyed soul, funk, rock and soul. Slow Down even married rock and funk with disco. TRACKLIST : Stranger In The City                         Slow Down ...

ONCE UPON A TIME...Songwriter

Слика
JUSTIN HAYWARD  Songwriter  (Deram,1977) - Rock       Hayward has always been at his best as a mystical/romantic, and  Songwriter  is the solo album that best displays these qualities around a relatively lean sound. From the gentle, lullaby-like "Raised on Love" to the ethereal mystical "Nostradamus," the album is a beguiling collection of material, more personal than his work with the Moody Blues. The material is richly scored, yet lean enough to seem like chamber music next to the Moody Blues' rock symphonies. ONCE UPON A TIME...Somethin's Happening

Слика
PETER FRAMPTON  Somethin's Happening  (A&M,1974) - Rock       1974’s ‘Somethin’s Happening’ was an invaluable building block in Frampton’s development into one of America’s biggest stars of the 1970s. GUITAR WOLF...Randy Rhoads

Слика
Randy Rhoads was just 25 when he lost his life in a plane crash in 1982 but he left quite the legacy. He was supremely gifted, book smart but not ostentatiously so, and would deftly introduce the highfalutin grandeur of classical music into popular metal compositions.       He would pioneer the asymmetrical V, working with Grover Jackson on what, posthumously, would become on of the most popular metal guitar designs ever. And more than this, the hot-shot guitarist from Quiet Riot would be the one chiefly responsible for resurrecting Ozzy Osbourne’s career after his acrimonious departure from Black Sabbath. In Rhoads, Osbourne found his white knight. QUIET RIOT Quiet Riot CBS Sony,1978 https://www.sendspace.com/file/925v6d

ONCE UPON A TIME...Correlations

Слика
ASHRA  Correlations  (Virgin,1979) - Electronic       T hose familiar with Manuel Göttsching’s Ash Ra Temple and even early solo Göttsching albums may feel lost on  Correlations . Its an odd nut in his discography, though a rewarding one given time. Its certainly not as overtly psychedelic as the early Ash Ra work; not as tied into hippie culture as their collaboration with Timothy Leary or as critically lauded as  New Age Of Earth . Like their collab with Leary though, its a record that seems to split fan opinion harshly. Given that the album was released in ’79 its not impossible to imagine that something like the emergence of disco might have had an effect on Göttsching, though not in any dancefloor ready capacity. There’s a propulsiveness to much of the record, provided by the drumming of Harald Grosskopf, whose influence here could also explain the influx of synth-pop to Ashra’s sound. Grosskopf would release his own overlooked gem,  S...

ONCE UPON A TIME...Cordon Bleu

Слика
SOLUTION  Cordon Bleu  (Rocket,1975) - Symphonic/Jazz fusion       Solution from Holland was one of the enjoyble bands from early to late'70's from progressive jazz fusion realm. Haveing a moderate succes in this field specialy for their third album Cordon bleu from 1975 with each album rlease after they become more an more mainstream jazz fusion, ligher and almost gone towards comercial side. Anyway this third album issued at Elton John's label Rocket records in 1975 keeps the flag high in jazz fusion world, being one of the pleasent surprises coming from Holland in that period. The album alternates from long instrumental pieces like Chappaqua and Whirligig with short pieces those being with voice. ONCE UPON A TIME...Don't Let Go

BEN SIDRAN  Don't Let Go  (Blue Thumb,1974) - Jazz funk      T he material walks a thin line between funky and straighter jazz and pop with an equal division between vocal and instrumental numbers over its 12 tracks. Sidran was establishing himself as a serious pianist and intricate composer, and as a songwriter with  Mose Allison 's sophisticated sense of irony.  TRACKLIST : Fat Jam                       House Of Blue Lites                       Ben Sidran's Midnite Tango                       The Chicken Glide                       She's Funny                       Monopoly                       Don't Let Go   ...

ONCE UPON A TIME Cochise

Слика
COCHISE  Cochise  (UA,1970) - Rock       Cochise was a British rock band formed in 1969 that played country rock in a similar vein to Creedence Clearwater Revival. Cochise released three studio albums and disbanded in 1972. Some of the band's members later became famous: singing guitarist Mick Crabham joined Procol Harum, B.J. Cole recorded solo and collaborated with many famous performers (Elton John, Uriah Heep, etc.) as a session musician, Rick Wills became a member of Foreigner, John Wilson played with David Gilmour. ONCE UPON A TIME...Caught In The Crossfire

Слика
JOHN WETTON  Caught In The Crossfire  (EG,1980) - Progressive/Hard rock       John released his first solo album in between  U.K.  and  Asia , and  Caught In The Crossfire  both looks back to the one and looks forward to the other. The leadoff track is actually something of a red herring, as John tries his hand at the music of The Police (and what singing bass player didn’t want to be Sting in 1980?). The rest of the album picks up where U.K. left off and prefigures the more commercial sound of Asia. ONCE UPON A TIME...Fountains Of Light

Слика
STARCASTLE  Fountains Of Light  (Epic,1977) - Progressive rock         “Fountains Of Light” has gorgeous harmonies, bass lines playing as a lead instrument, symphonic keyboard flourishes, excellent guitar playing, impeccable drumming and nice vocals. It’s true that it sounds like Yes, but it sounds like the “Great Yes”. This is as good as anything Yes was putting out in the end of the 70’s. But there is here something more than Yes. There is also an American outlook added with hints of Kansas and a stronger helping of Styx ensuring that Starcastle weren’t quite a Yes clone. I don’t deny that the keyboard work of Herb Schildt, the bass playing of Gary Strater and voice of Terry Luttrell do strongly rely on Wakeman, Squire and Anderson for inspiration. But when the results are this convincing, then does that really matter? TRACKLIST : Fountains                       Dawning Of The Day    ...

DON'T SHOOT ME...Dick Sims

Слика
Keyboardist Dick Sims backed up two of the greatest classic rockers of all times, and a dozen others that were pretty dang good in his 60 years.      Before working for Clapton, Sims worked with  Bob Seger . He's heard on Seger's 'Back in '72' album, which includes the timeless hit 'Turn the Page.' Along with Jamie Oldaker and Carl Radle, Sims help develop what would become known as the 'Tulsa Sound.'       What was supposed to be a single tour turned into an almost 10 year run with Clapton. His style helped shape Clapton's sound on albums like '461 Ocean Boulevard' and 'Slowhand.' One can hear his work on songs like 'I Shot the Sheriff' and 'Wonderful Tonight.' ONCE UPON A TIME...Careless

Слика
STEPHEN BISHOP  Careless  (ABC,1976) - Pop rock       Though the album is one of Bishop’s softest and rarely works up a sweat [even “Rock and Roll Slave,” one of three cuts featuring backing vocals from Garfunkel, ironically turns out to be a light ballad], the songwriting craft throughout is impressive and ballads like “Never Letting Go” (featuring Khan on backing vocals and later covered by Phoebe Snow), the sparse “The Same Old Tears on a New Background,” and the pretty “One More Night” (later covered by such legendary vocalists as Barbra Streisand and Johnny Mathis) are first-rate, while the appealing lite-disco of “Save It for a Rainy Day” – sporting backing vocals from Khan and a brief guitar solo from Clapton (the rock legend also pops up on slide guitar on “Sinking in an Ocean of Tears”) – would become Bishop’s first hit, climbing to #22.
