ONCE UPON A TIME.....Milk' N' Cookies

Слика
MILK'N'COOKIES  Milk 'N' Cookies  (Island,1975) - Power pop       They formed in the early 1970s in Woodmere, Long Island, a short drive from the bustling proto-punk scene in New York City, where the  New York Dolls  reigned supreme and their brand of glam-influenced gutter rock was already beginning to burn out under its own brilliance. While most of the local bands around them were steeped in stadium rock, Milk 'N' Cookies, still in their teens, decided to record 4-track songs influenced by the British glitter rock of the era— T. Rex ,  Bowie , Sweet,  Roxy Music , et al.—and perhaps unwittingly became precursors to U.S. power pop. They have a major hand in creating the "tough glam" aesthetic, a sort of blend of UK androgyny, N.Y. grit and L.A. glamour that continued to rear its sequined head from the New Romantics to hair metal to Britpop, and beyond. ONCE UPON A TIME.....Talas

Слика
TALAS  Talas  (Evenfall,1979) - Hard rock      10 track debut album from Buffalo based group Talas, a power trio with the amazing Billy Sheehan on bass, Dave Constantino on guitar and Paul Varga on drums. The band played a mixture of cover songs and original material in their live set, and all three instrumentalists alternated on lead vocals. This album generated the regional hit single, "See Saw" and also features a silly cover of "Stop In The Name Of Love" by The Supremes. TRACKLIST : See Saw                     Stop! ONCE UPON A TIME.....Fandango

Слика
FANDANGO  Fandango  (RCA,1977) - Rock       Joe Lynn Turner describes his first band as “an eclectic mix of R&B, pop, country, jazz and melodic rock”. In fact, no style was off limits as New Yorkers Fandango pursued their rock’n’roll dream across four albums in the late 70s. They bent whichever way the breeze was blowing. LITTLE DRUMMER BOY.....Mikkey Dee

Слика
Famous for drumming in Motorhead, Mikkey Dee is up there as one of the best rock drummers of all time. Rising to prominence with Motorhead in 1992, Dee took over from the previous drummer Phil Taylor, forcing his career to succeed.       Dee has lent his exceptional drumming talents to other notable bands such as King Diamond, Helloween, and Don Dokken.       Mikkey Dee’s remarkable drumming skills, diverse musical collaborations, and electrifying stage presence have placed him among the elite ranks of rock drummers. He truly is an iconic figure. DON DOKKEN Up From The Ashes Geffen, 1990 https://www.sendspace.com/file/t4f0zc

ONCE UPON A TIME.....Release

Слика
DAVID KNOPFLER  Release  (Peach River,1983) - Rock     David Knopfler  recorded two albums with Dire Straits  and then abruptly left the band, releasing an album several years later that sounded remarkably like Dire Straits. Now, if this were a Mark Knopfler solo record, you’d be wondering what happened to Mark’s voice and if someone accidentally deleted the lead guitar tracks. Other than that,  Release  is pretty much Dire Straits firing on fewer cylinders. At its best, the album sounds like outtakes from the Straits’ first few albums.  TRACKLIST : Soul Kissing                        Come To Me                        Madonna's Daughter                        The Girl And The Paperboy                     ...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....Melissa Etheridge

Слика
MELISSA ETHERIDGE  Melissa Etheridge  (Island,1988) - Roots rock        In 1988,  Melissa Etheridge  released a strong and passionate debut album which was built during several years of grinding out recognition, one small venue at a time. With this well earned pedigree behind her and a drive and determination for success ahead, Etheridge found a rather unique niche and filled a rather huge void in the popular music scene of the late 1980s. Her raw-throated vocals, confessional compositions, and simple yet effective acoustic-built music totally contrasted the flash and fluff which saturated the conventional airwaves and this stunning debut helped clear the path for the seismic shift in the music scene which would occur a few years later. ONCE UPON A TIME.....It's Time

Слика
BONNIE BRAMLETT  It's Time  (Capricorn,1974) - Southern rock       Maybe the pick of the crop, with telling help from numerous terrific players. Bonnie tackles Gregg Allman's "Oncoming Traffic" with paticular aplomb but there are many highlights on this album. TRACKLIST : Your Kind Of Kindness                        Atlanta, Georgia                        It's Time                        Cober Me                        Higher & Higher                        Where You Come From                        Cowboys And Indians                       ...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....Barbi Benton

Слика
BARBIE BENTON  Barbie Benton  (Playboy,1975) - Country       Didn't expect Barbi to entertain me with one of the best country style albums I've heard. Her vocal timing is awesome and the song selection on this album is great. ONCE UPON A TIME.....Rose Of My Heart

Слика
NICOLETTE LARSON  Rose Of My Heart  (MCA,1986) - Country       Rose Of My Heart was Larson’s second and final country album for MCA. It peaked at No. 40 on the Billboard Top Country Albums and remained on the chart for sixteen weeks. Three singles were released from the album. “Let Me Be the First” was released in February 1986 and reached No. 63 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs. “That’s How You Know When Love’s Right”, a duet with Steve Wariner, was released in May and reached No. 9. It proved to be Larson’s most successful entry on the Country Songs chart. In September, the final single, “That’s More About Love (Than I Wanted to Know)”, was released and reached No. 49. ONCE UPON A TIME.....The Ballad Of Sally Rose

Слика
EMMYLOU HARRIS  The Ballad Of Sally Rose  (WB,1985) - Country       After 3 missteps in a row of varying severity, Emmylou needed a comeback. Her only (mild) commercial successes of the decade up to ’85 had been Roses in the Snow and Evangeline, and, with the exception of the former album, her output hadn’t nearly lived up to her potential as a songwriter. When an artist finds themselves in such a slump, one option is to break new ground. Another is to return to the style that first granted them success. With the Ballad of Sally Rose, Emmylou elected to do both. By pushing in new conceptual directions with the idea of a narrative concept album, and going back to the smooth, outlaw-influenced sound that had put her so indelibly on the map, Emmylou managed to craft some of her strongest original work and an album that was perhaps the boldest personal statement of her career up to that point. VOICES IN THE SKY.....Cake

Слика
The Cake  were the daughters of Sgt. Pepper, a baroque girl group who wrote psychedelic madrigals and sang blue-eyed soul with rock ‘n’ roll attitude. This trio of brash and beautiful teenage New York City girls Jeanette Jacobs, Barbara Morillo and Eleanor Barooshian jumped onto the rollercoaster of the 60s music scene just as it hit its peak and spiraled into a downward curve. The Cake were formed in ‘66 and baked by ‘68, releasing two albums that have been cherished ever since by music enthusiasts as curios of the time. ONCE UPON A TIME.....Nervous On The Road

Слика
BRINSLEY SCHWARZ  Nervous On The Road  (UA,1972) - Pub rock      A second release in 1972, and, despite the title, rather than alive album, this is all studio, with ten further songs from a band seemingly in peak condition. This time Lowe is back in the driving seat of composition, Gomm only getting one write, and Andrews only a Lowe co-write, with a couple of covers for good measure. However, although this record has amongst the best of their songs, some scrape the bottom of a barrel, howver vintage the content of the barrel. It’s Been So Long is barely more than pastiche, and Happy What We’re Doing is a lacklustre early foray into a bluebeat rhythm. After that false start, faces are saved with the monumental Surrender To The Rhythm, the epitome of Nashville/Memphis/Camden Town fusion that they had been forging.  TRACKLIST : It's Been So Long                       Happy Doing What We're Doing ...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....The Concert For Bangladesh

Слика
GEORGE HARRISON & FRIENDS  The Concert For Bangladesh  (Apple,1971) - Rock       Having been moved by his friend  Ravi Shankar 's appeal to help the homeless Bengali refugees of the 1971 India-Pakistan war, Harrison leaped into action, organizing on short notice what became a bellwether for the spectacular rock & roll benefits of the 1980s and beyond. The large, almost unwieldy band was loaded with rock luminaries -- including  Beatles  alumnus  Ringo Starr ,  Eric Clapton ,  Badfinger , and two who became stars as a result of their electric performances here,  Leon Russel l  (the medley of "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and "Young Blood") and  Billy Preston  ("That's the Way God Planned It"). Yet Harrison is in confident command, running through highlights from his recent triumphant  All Things Must Pass   album in fine voice, secure enough to revisit his  Beatles  legacy from ...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....June 1,1974

AYERS, ENO, NICO, CALE  June 1,1974  (Island,1974) - Art rock       The highlights of a concert organized by genial eccentric Kevin Ayers (ex- Soft Machine ) , this offers one side of Ayers's genially eccentric songs and one of Eno singing Eno songs at full volume (note demonic cackle) and John Cale singing an  Elvis Presley  song at full volume . And also, oh well, Nico singing ' The End ' . ONCE UPON A TIME.....Robbie Krieger & Friends

Слика
ROBBIE KRIEGER  Robbie Krieger & Friends  (Blue Note,1977) - Jazz rock       This LP is not some kind of lame attempt to resurrect the Doors legacy. This album could probably be considered fusion jazz. If Chuck Mangione recorded a LP with Robert Fripp, the resulting output would probably sound similar to the music on "Robbie Krieger and Friends". It's nice to hear Robbie's guitar virtuosity as the focal point of the 8 songs on this album.   TRACKLIST : Gumpopper                        Uptown                        Every Day                        Marilyn Monroe                        The Ally                        Low Bottomy       ...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....Inner Secrets

Слика
SANTANA  Inner Secrets  (Columbia,1978) - Rock       Inner Secrets  is a controversial album for many Santana fans. It marks a decided move toward album oriented music. The record followed 1977’s  Moonflower , an album that largely contained songs tied to Latin infused fusion.  With  Inner Secrets  Santana doubled down on a pop future by bringing top 40 hit makers Brian Potter and Dennis Lambert in to produce.  Not only did they produce the record, but Lambert co-wrote almost half of the songs on the record. TRACKLIST : Dealer / Spanish Rose                        Move On                        One Chain (Don't Make No Prison)                        Stormy                        Well All Ri...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....Soap Opera

Слика
KINKS  Soap Opera  (RCA,1975) - Glam rock      Soap Opera  is the most cohesive and unified of the three works from The Kinks’ theatrical period. While the day-in-the-life structure certainly helped Ray Davies avoid wandering off-topic, the strength of  Soap Opera  owes more to the depth of Ray Davies’ compassion for those condemned to lead lives of quiet desperation in the modern workplace and his acute perception of the effect of organizational life on the human soul.  Soap Opera  explores the meaning of identity in an increasingly anonymous world where only the few people we call stars seem to “be somebody,” while the un-rich and un-famous stuck in meaningless jobs are considered nobodies sentenced to a life of insecurity spiced with constant and largely frustrating attempts to justify their meaning in the world.
