     After 3 missteps in a row of varying severity, Emmylou needed a comeback. Her only (mild) commercial successes of the decade up to ’85 had been Roses in the Snow and Evangeline, and, with the exception of the former album, her output hadn’t nearly lived up to her potential as a songwriter. When an artist finds themselves in such a slump, one option is to break new ground. Another is to return to the style that first granted them success. With the Ballad of Sally Rose, Emmylou elected to do both. By pushing in new conceptual directions with the idea of a narrative concept album, and going back to the smooth, outlaw-influenced sound that had put her so indelibly on the map, Emmylou managed to craft some of her strongest original work and an album that was perhaps the boldest personal statement of her career up to that point.

  MICK FLEETWOOD'S ZOO  I'm Not Me  (RCA,1983) - Rock        The story behind Mick Fleetwood’s 1983  I’m Not Me  is well known. It was his second “solo” album for RCA Records, but everyone, especially Fleetwood, knew it was a band effort. Fleetwood’s name was the draw, but The Zoo was a fully formed ensemble that had been playing together for a year. This occurred because Fleetwood wanted a real group and not an album put out by studio musicians who’d come by, do their parts, and ride off to other projects.        The principal members of the Zoo were Fleetwood on drums, guitarist/singers Billy Burnette and Steve Ross, and bassist/singer George Hawkins. (Hawkins had appeared on Fleetwood’s previous release,  The Visitor ). As Burnette, Hawkins, and Ross shared lead vocal duties and co-wrote many of the songs, the band’s structure was easily compared to that of Fleetwood Mac.   BATTEAUX  Batteaux  (Columbia,1973) - Folk,Rock,Funk         Batteaux  is a long treasured and notoriously under appreciated 70’s underground folk-funk classic. The only release by the Batteau brother duo is a perfect mix of balearic blue eyed soul and west coast country rock. Admirers old and new have been constantly pondering, why wasn’t this better known? The record had all the ingredients for commercial success. It was released on Columbia in ’73, features virtuoso guest players including Tom Scott, John Guerin, and Andy Newmark, as well as incredible songwriting and musicianship from the Batteau brothers themselves.
