     Opeth's importance as both a prog metal and a prog rock is impossible to understate. They've undertaken a relentlessly adventurous sonic evolution behind leader Mikael Akerfeldt, but bassist Martin Mendez has been an ever reliable presence throughout, capable of churning out fluid lines perfectly suited to the band's every innovation.

  IAN MATTHEWS  Some Days You Eat The Bear...  (Elektra,1974) - Country rock       Ian Matthews moved away from country rock on Some Days You Eat The Bear and Some Days The Bear Eats You, and switched between the LA country sound, the West Coast Sound and soft rock. The music was slick, polished and radio friendly. That was no surprise, given the personnel that played on the album. They provided the perfect accompaniment for Ian Matthews. Especially on his rueful cover of Tom Waits’ Ol’ 55, and soul-baring covers of I Don’t Wanna Talk About It and Tried So Hard. There was also a cover of Steely Dan’s Dirty Work, where Ian Matthews and his all-star band stay true to the carefully crafted original. Then on Wailing Goodbye, Keep On Sailing and Home Ian Matthews’ showcased his talents as a singer and songwriter. However, he had kept one of his finest songs until last. The melodic and memorable strains of The Fault closed Some Days You Eat The Bear and Some Days...

  ANDWELLA  World's End  (Reflection,1970) - Psychedelic rock       Following the break-up of Belfast psych-blues trio The Method, teenage singer-songwriter David Lewis moved to London, formed Andwellas Dream and signed to CBS. Though their roots show with a fondness for Cream-like workouts, debut album Love And Poetry (1969) shows an emerging pastoral, psych-pop side, with standouts The Days Grew Longer For Love and Midday Sun.       After a move to Reflection Records, World’s End followed in 1970. It sounds like a lot of living was done in the interim – the grooves are deeper, the guitars stingier, the writing more worldly. The McCartney-ish ballad Lady Love and the blissful I’m Just Happy To See You Get Her show a burgeoning talent. ONCE UPON A TIME.....Fortune

  FORTUNE  Fortune  (WB,1978) - AOR       This was the first incarnation of the band, which would end of morphing into a melodic rock AOR outfit in the early 1980’s and releasing another self-titled album in 1985 full of AOR hits. This release isn’t bad and has some decent period rock with a soulful vibe courtesy of a female lead vocalist. Side One is strong with 3 out of 4 chugging rockers. Side Two moves more into a softer pop rock style however still in a catchy mode, like the strong soulful vocals in “Heavy Love” and closer “Rainy Day Woman”.
