GRIP Inc.  The Power Of Inner Strength  (Steamhammer,1995) - Groove metal


     GRIP INC. – the new band of drummer Dave Lombardo and ex-Despair/Voodoocult guitarist Waldemar Sorychta – have delivered a real blast with "The Power Of Inner Strength." GRIP INC. easily withstands direct comparisons to Slayer (which inevitably arise when you have a man like Lombardo behind the drum kit). In my opinion, they even take things one step further in terms of songwriting, even if they're partly in the same vein stylistically ('Hostage To Heaven', 'Colors Of Death').

        More than any other drummer, Matt Cameron laid the rhythmic foundation for the Nineties rock revolution, reconciling proggy technicality with overwhelming force. He aptly characterized his rotary-blade rhythms on the 1991 Soundgarden track "Jesus Christ Pose" as "a pure assault of the senses," but that efficient brutality wasn't necessarily characteristic of Cameron's work with the band – his drumming on  Superunknown  is as thoughtful as it is heavy, from the fluid asymmetry of "Spoonman" to the unshakeable backbeat of "Fell on Black Days." Twenty years after its release, Dave Grohl was  still raving , "Nobody played drums like Matt."   GRAVY TRAIN  Gravy Train  (Vertigo,1970) - Progressive rock       Their debut shows Gravy Train as a brave and daring underground band, heavily influenced by and derivative of other prog/hard acts of the time, yet actually trying to push the boundaries forward. Unfortunately, since the album bombed, the guys preferred to dump all the experimentation of these songs in favour of a smoother, more commercial sound later on, which totally destroyed their idiosyncrasy and forever nailed them as second-rate good-for-nothings.
