ALAN PARSONS PROJECT  I Robot  (Arista,1977) - Progressive rock


      This album is much more light hearted when compared to the project’s debut album which isn’t a surprise as we all know Tales was a musical interpretation of the horror stories of Edgar Allan Poe. Still Parsons kept the mystery from Tales on I robot. Listening to the amazing space sounds and the futuristic artwork, the main theme on this album must be progress but it isn’t really coming through in the lyrics, so I don’t believe this really was meant to be a concept album. Although “Genesis ch 1 V 32” recaptures the atmosphere of the opening track, it adds some wonderful keyboard melodies which do sound typical seventies if you ‘re familiar with the music of Jean Michel Jarre and Pink Floyd.

LITTLE DRUMMER BOY...Matt Cameron

        More than any other drummer, Matt Cameron laid the rhythmic foundation for the Nineties rock revolution, reconciling proggy technicality with overwhelming force. He aptly characterized his rotary-blade rhythms on the 1991 Soundgarden track "Jesus Christ Pose" as "a pure assault of the senses," but that efficient brutality wasn't necessarily characteristic of Cameron's work with the band – his drumming on  Superunknown  is as thoughtful as it is heavy, from the fluid asymmetry of "Spoonman" to the unshakeable backbeat of "Fell on Black Days." Twenty years after its release, Dave Grohl was  still raving , "Nobody played drums like Matt."   GRAVY TRAIN  Gravy Train  (Vertigo,1970) - Progressive rock       Their debut shows Gravy Train as a brave and daring underground band, heavily influenced by and derivative of other prog/hard acts of the time, yet actually trying to push the boundaries forward. Unfortunately, since the album bombed, the guys preferred to dump all the experimentation of these songs in favour of a smoother, more commercial sound later on, which totally destroyed their idiosyncrasy and forever nailed them as second-rate good-for-nothings.
