DON'T SHOOT ME.....David Bryan

Слика
David Bryan is a keyboard player, songwriter, and founding member of Bon Jovi. He is also a Tony Award-winning composer, lyricist and orchestrator.         Born in Edison, New Jersey, David Bryan began taking piano lessons at the age of seven. He continued this classical study with Emery Hack for thirteen years. He enrolled at Rutgers University, where he continued his musical education (and pre-med studies), preparing him for an audition at the prestigious Juilliard School of Music. When the phone rang with Jon Bon Jovi on the other end saying, “The record company just called. We have a record deal.” The choice was made and the rest is history… BON JOVI Bon Jovi Mercury,1984 https://www.sendspace.com/file/sb7eu2

ONCE UPON A TIME.....Swallow Tales

Слика
COCHISE  Swallow Tales  (Liberty,1971) - Rock, Country rock       Cochise had neither the stylistic distinction nor the top-shelf songwriting to attract wide notice, their approach encompassing a hard rocking update of  Buddy Holly 's "Love's Made a Fool of You"; original material which somewhat recalled  the Guess Who 's rootsier side; and lightweight U.S. West Coast folk-country-rock. As far as the latter style goes, "Lost Hearts," with a light early  Love  influence, is their best effort, while "Another Day" sounds a little like a cross between  Crosby, Stills & Nash  and the early  Bee Gees , as peculiar as that mixture may seem. ONCE UPON A TIME.....Dead Forever

Слика
BUFFALO  Dead Forever...  (Vertigo,1972) - Rock       This isn’t Buffalo's finest moment; the band was still in its beginnings and its style was still being evolved. The energy levels are not as high as on subsequent albums. Nevertheless, this is a great crunching 1972 heavy rock album which still wipes the floor with its contemporaries. The interesting thing about this line-up of Buffalo is that the band had two lead vocalists, however this was not uncommon for the time. ONCE UPON A TIME.....Steppenwolf Live

Слика
STEPPENWOLF  Steppenwolf Live  (Dunhill,1970) - Rock       Recorded at various concerts in 1970, this double LP also infamously includes a handful of studio-created "live" cuts with overdubbed crowd noise on top of what are some surprisingly lean and effective live-in-the-studio performances. It isn't half-bad musically , and it is one of the choicer pop-culture documents of its era, featuring such topical songs as "Don't Step on the Grass, Sam" and "Draft Resister," and longtime parts of their repertory such as "Tighten up Your Wig," "Corina, Corina," "Power Play," and "The Pusher." The obligatory hits, "Magic Carpet Ride" and "Born to Be Wild," are also present, and it is fun listening, featuring essentially the same lineup that recorded the  Monster  album that preceded it. The guitars of  John Kay  and  Larry Byrom  interweave beautifully, and there isn't much excess, even allowi...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....Return To Fantasy

Слика
URIAH HEEP  Return To Fantasy  (Bronze,1975) - Hard rock       "Return To Fantasy" saw Gary Thain replaced by ASIA/KING CRIMSON's John Wetton who brought a new feel into the HEEP's sound. This album has all the heavy tones and grinds you would expect from URIAH HEEP with David Byron's powerful operatic rock voice, Mick Box's guitar work , Ken Hensley's keyboards and Lee Kepslake's drumming. There is no question that this is a heavy toned concept album with dark progressive overtones. I grew up with the music of Uriah Heep and always found something magical in this band with "Return To Fantasy" ranking as one of my favs (certainly from the mid 70's work).   TRACKLIST : Return To Fantasy                        Shady Lady                        Devil's Daughter                     ...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....In City Dreams

Слика
ROBIN TROWER  In City Dreams  (Chrysalis,1977) - Rock       This is the fifth solo album from the ex-Procul Harum guitarist. This was the first album where James Dewar hung up the bass and concentrated on vocals alone. For me, this was a marriage made in heaven, as Trower and Dewar complement each other so well. Trower’s tone and style of playing is unique – I don’t see the Hendrix copycat nonsense. There is so much more to Robin’s playing! Dewar’s vocals are so soulful and rich in texture.         A great album. I don’t think Trower made a bad album for the first 7 of his solos records. ONCE UPON A TIME.....Over The Top

Слика
COZY POWELL  Over The Top  (Polydor,1979) - Rock       Cozy Powell carved out a pretty good career for himself and certainly starting out in the early seventies as part of Jeff Beck's band was getting off on the right foot. "Over The Top" was his first solo album released in 1979. Three guitarists help out and I'm not the biggest fan of Clempson or Marsden but yes Gary Moore does it for me but his bluesy style will unfortunately be on one track only as in "Killer". Check out his playing 5 1/2 minutes in to the end. Jack Bruce on bass. Nice. Don Airey adds synths and piano and man I could do without the synths on here. Especially "Heidi Goes To Town" where the synths sound bad. Even the self titled closer features plenty of those synths and no guitar. Nooo! It doesn't end well. The opener is a cover and then we get "El Sid" with that great sounding rhythm section and the guitar doesn't sound good at all to start but it sure gets ...

LITTLE DRUMMER BOY.....Gary Chester

Слика
As a man of many talents, Gary Chester was famous for drumming with bands such as The Coasters, The Monkees, and the Lovin’ Spoonful as well as being renowned for writing his own books and teaching.       One of Chester’s greatest contributions to the drumming world was his innovative drumming systems. These systems, which have been embraced by the likes of Kenny Aronoff and Dave Weckl, focused on expanding drummers’ coordination and groove ability.       His instructional techniques had a strong emphasis on four-limb independence, ambidexterity, cross-dominance, and playing in harmony with the song. It’s this kind of dedication to teaching – alongside his ability to push creative boundaries – that sets him apart from other rock drummers out there. ONCE UPON A TIME.....Naturally

Слика
J.J. CALE  Naturally  (Shelter,1971) - Country rock       Naturally was the first solo album Cale recorded and it featured what would become his calling card, minimalistic guitar/vocal interplay and a laid back vibe. This is a short, 12 song record that brings to mind desert settings and low key affairs. It also features his one hit song, Crazy Mama, his only song to ever chart which is surprising to me since at least half these songs are more melodious and engaging. TRACKLIST : Call Me The Breeze                        Call The Doctor                        Don't Go To Strangers                        Woman I Love                        Magnolia                     ...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....Out Of The Storm

Слика
JACK BRUCE  Out Of The Storm  (RSO,1974) - Rock, Jazz rock       This album is another of Bruce's more progressive releases. And while none of the music is mind blowingly progessive, each track has enough inventiveness and originality to keep this prog listener satisfied.        Bruce's bass playing is at it's best here, and surprisingly for this, the first release of this album (sadly, without bonus tracks), the mix is quite good. The bass, which leads most of the songs here, is full and punchy. Guitarist Steve Hunter, who I will admit I know nothing about, does a fine job of keeping up with Bruce's twists and turns. And the drummers do an excellent job as well. TRACKLIST : Pieces Of Mind                        Golden Days                        Running Through Our Hands             ...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....Future Shock

Слика
HERBIE HANCOCK  Future Shock  (Columbia,1983) - Jazz,Electronic       Spinning a post apocalyptic view of urban music,  Future Shock  used hip-hop before it had ever began reaching a mass market. In the days when guys like Kurtis Blow and Grandmaster Flash were telling tales of the of inner-city life through poetry styles that originated in Jamaica, Hancock grabbed producer Bill Laswell and "Rockit" came thrashing out of speakers everywhere. With that said, the record may sound dated, but its importance cannot possibly be overstated. ONCE UPON A TIME.....Smackwater Jack

Слика
QUINCY JONES  Smackwater Jack  (A&M,1971) - Jazz       “Smackwater Jack” is basically a big band album disguised as a pop album. This formula will work well for Jones a few years later when he starts doing the same thing for Michael Jackson. The big band on “Jack” is all-star affair, some of the soloists include, Freddie Hubbard, Hubert Laws, Milt Jackson, Toots Thielman, Jim Hall and Eric Gayle. You can expect plenty of top notch and inspired solos on all these tracks. Unfortunately Quincy sings on two songs, and he’s not a great singer. Also, the theme from the first Bill Cosby show features Bill himself with some ‘amusing’ vocalizing that probably seemed funnier in the past. Other songs on the album also center around TV themes, plus there are few covers of pop and RnB hits too.   TRACKLIST : Smackwater Jack                    Cast Your Fate To The Wind            ...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....Contradiction

OHIO PLAYERS  Contradiction  (Mercury,1976) - Funk,Soul       Darker than  Earth, Wind & Fire , more dangerous than  Kool & the Gang  and (way) dirtier than the  Commodores , the Ohio Players were the real deal — the “ Stones ” of the mid-’70s soul scene.  TRACKLIST : Contradiction                        Precious Love                        Little Lady Maria                        Far East Mississippi                        Who'd She Coo?                        My Life                        Tell The Truth                   ...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....Born To Dance

Слика
PLAYERS ASSOCIATION  Born To Dance  (Vanguard,1977) - Disco, Funk      The list of jazz improvisers who appear on the Players Association's second album, Born to Dance, is impressive; tenor saxman  Michael Brecker , alto saxman  David Sanborn , trumpeter  Jon Faddis , and guitarist  Steve Khan  are among the participants. And percussionist  James Mtume , who has jazz credentials but is best known for producing, writing, and performing R&B, is also on board. But despite boasting an impressive lineup, Born to Dance is only a slight improvement over the Players Association's self-titled debut album. This isn't a bad album; "How Do You Like It," "Everything's Gonna Be O.K.," "Make It Last All Night," and other tunes that were written or co-written by leader/drummer/arranger  Chris Hills  are catchy but unremarkable.  TRACKLIST : Goin' To The Disco                   ...
