LITTLE DRUMMER BOY.....Gary Chester

 


     As a man of many talents, Gary Chester was famous for drumming with bands such as The Coasters, The Monkees, and the Lovin’ Spoonful as well as being renowned for writing his own books and teaching.
     One of Chester’s greatest contributions to the drumming world was his innovative drumming systems. These systems, which have been embraced by the likes of Kenny Aronoff and Dave Weckl, focused on expanding drummers’ coordination and groove ability.
     His instructional techniques had a strong emphasis on four-limb independence, ambidexterity, cross-dominance, and playing in harmony with the song. It’s this kind of dedication to teaching – alongside his ability to push creative boundaries – that sets him apart from other rock drummers out there.

  MICK FLEETWOOD'S ZOO  I'm Not Me  (RCA,1983) - Rock        The story behind Mick Fleetwood’s 1983  I’m Not Me  is well known. It was his second “solo” album for RCA Records, but everyone, especially Fleetwood, knew it was a band effort. Fleetwood’s name was the draw, but The Zoo was a fully formed ensemble that had been playing together for a year. This occurred because Fleetwood wanted a real group and not an album put out by studio musicians who’d come by, do their parts, and ride off to other projects.        The principal members of the Zoo were Fleetwood on drums, guitarist/singers Billy Burnette and Steve Ross, and bassist/singer George Hawkins. (Hawkins had appeared on Fleetwood’s previous release,  The Visitor ). As Burnette, Hawkins, and Ross shared lead vocal duties and co-wrote many of the songs, the band’s structure was easily compared to that of Fleetwood Mac. The only release by the Batteau brother duo is a perfect mix of balearic blue eyed soul and west coast country rock. Admirers old and new have been constantly pondering, why wasn’t this better known?
