URIAH HEEP  Return To Fantasy  (Bronze,1975) - Hard rock


     "Return To Fantasy" saw Gary Thain replaced by ASIA/KING CRIMSON's John Wetton who brought a new feel into the HEEP's sound. This album has all the heavy tones and grinds you would expect from URIAH HEEP with David Byron's powerful operatic rock voice, Mick Box's guitar work , Ken Hensley's keyboards and Lee Kepslake's drumming. There is no question that this is a heavy toned concept album with dark progressive overtones. I grew up with the music of Uriah Heep and always found something magical in this band with "Return To Fantasy" ranking as one of my favs (certainly from the mid 70's work).

  MICK FLEETWOOD'S ZOO  I'm Not Me  (RCA,1983) - Rock        The story behind Mick Fleetwood’s 1983  I’m Not Me  is well known. It was his second “solo” album for RCA Records, but everyone, especially Fleetwood, knew it was a band effort. Fleetwood’s name was the draw, but The Zoo was a fully formed ensemble that had been playing together for a year. This occurred because Fleetwood wanted a real group and not an album put out by studio musicians who’d come by, do their parts, and ride off to other projects.        The principal members of the Zoo were Fleetwood on drums, guitarist/singers Billy Burnette and Steve Ross, and bassist/singer George Hawkins. (Hawkins had appeared on Fleetwood’s previous release,  The Visitor ). As Burnette, Hawkins, and Ross shared lead vocal duties and co-wrote many of the songs, the band’s structure was easily compared to that of Fleetwood Mac.   BATTEAUX  Batteaux  (Columbia,1973) - Folk,Rock,Funk         Batteaux  is a long treasured and notoriously under appreciated 70’s underground folk-funk classic. The only release by the Batteau brother duo is a perfect mix of balearic blue eyed soul and west coast country rock. Admirers old and new have been constantly pondering, why wasn’t this better known? The record had all the ingredients for commercial success. It was released on Columbia in ’73, features virtuoso guest players including Tom Scott, John Guerin, and Andy Newmark, as well as incredible songwriting and musicianship from the Batteau brothers themselves.         A virtuosic American heavy metal and hard rock guitarist, Paul Gilbert is best known as the ace shredder and co-founder of  Mr. Big , and as a member of Los Angeles-based metallers  Racer X .
