  AUTOMATIC MAN  Automatic Man  (Island,1976) - Art/Prog/Jazz       Automatic Man consisted of four people. The self-titled debut album featured a stellar lineup:  Keyboard  player and singer  Bayete Todd Cochran  was the front man.  San Francisco Bay  area musician  Doni Harvey  played bass,  Pat Thrall  on  guitar  and ex- Santana  percussionist  Michael Shrieve  on drums.       Their self-titled  debut album  Automatic Man was probably the band's high mark, in my opinion it was one of the finest albums of the fusion era, possibly equalling  Return To Forever 's classic  Romantic Warrior .   BUDDY MILES  Them Changes  (Mercury,1970) - Funk rock       Miles, as a drummer and vocalist, first came to my attention as part of the brilliant but short lived Electric Flag. He gained international acclaim as a member of Jimi Hendrix’s Band Of Gypsies. Between 1968 and 2005 he issued close to twenty solo albums including two excellent ones with Carlos Santana in 1972. My favorite Miles album, which is also considered one of his classic releases, is  Them Changes.  Released in 1970, it helped to define and explore the fusion of rock and funk music. He was basically a powerful rock drummer who had a fine rhythm & blues oriented voice; the combination of which made his sound versatile and unique.   LOL COXHILL  Ear Of The Beholder  (Dandelion/Ampex,1971) - Jazz       It is one of the most uncompromising albums of its age, and one of the most peculiarly enjoyable. It was also, upon release, one of the lowest-selling albums ever released by the Warner Brothers giant, yet today a small cult insists it is also one of the most beloved.   EDDIE JOBSON  Theme Of Secrets  (Private Music,1985) - Electronic      This is all played on a computer which doesn't sound promising at first but actually the sampled sounds sit somewhere between acoustic and electronic which creates a unique atmosphere and original textures.Eddie also is a wonderfull composer and TOS gives full reign to his massive talent.         Instrumental guitarist who has worked with the Dixie Dregs, Kansas and Deep Purple. Most shredders would not even attempt Morse's fearsome alternate-picked arpeggios.   BILLY PRESTON  Billy Preston  (A&M,1976) - Soul,Rock       Far from the quality (or lack thereof) that the rating consensus implies, this is a solid slab of mid-70s funk and soul with mild disco influences. Yes, that album cover is embarrassing... but aside from that, this album is solid and a continuation of what Preston was doing prior on It's My Pleasure. The musicians present on this project make it alone worth seeking out (Jeff Beck, ToP horn section, TONTO production).   JAMES YOUNG / JAN HAMMER  City Slickers  (Passport,1985) - Rock       Towering Styx axe-man James Young hits the streets solo, following the leads of former cohorts  Tommy Shaw  and  Dennis DeYoung . During the heady height of the Chicago platinum pomp band, Young was really only good for one song per record, and in most cases that cut was a keeper ("Miss America," "Snowblind"). First time alone, Young wisely gets help from moral booster  Jan Hammer , whose consummate keyboard skills guided guitar-first giants like  Tommy Bolin ,  Jeff Beck , and  Neal Schon . The resulting collaboration contains some cool moments, such as radio track "Something to Remember You By" and quasi-classic Bolin reference "Wild Dogs in the Night." City Slicker might have made waves if someone heard it, but the album promptly disappeared, along with Young, who resurfaced in Styx and released another solo work almost ten years later.   BUCKINGHAM NICKS  Buckingham Nicks  (Polydor,1973) - Folk rock       Before Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham were in Fleetwood Mac, they were a duo and recorded  Buckingham Nicks.       The two met in high school but didn’t get together musically or romantically until a couple of years later. They lived in San Jose, while Stevie took classes at San Jose State and worked.       They collaborated on songs and made demos whenever they got the chance.       Buckingham Nicks  was released in 1973 but wasn’t promoted.   PETER GREEN  Little Dreamer  (PVK,1980) - Blues rock       This album by the founder of Fleetwood Mac takes a bluesier approach than the earlier  In the Skies , and there's no doubt that the blues is where Green is most at home (B.B. King once said Peter Green was one of the few guitarists who could make him sweat).       Green has lost none of his touch - the key to his work is that which he leaves unstated - his guitar playing and singing is fascinatingly 'implicit'. And sometimes he doesn't play guitar at all, but lays down his seldom heard second string instead, some tasty harmonica.   ROBIN TROWER  Passion  (GNP Crescendo,1987) - Blues rock       Guitarist Robin Trower enjoyed considerable success in the mid-'70s with his tasteful, Jimi Hendrix-inspired style of blues-rock. The Procol Harum veteran's popularity faded as the 1980s progressed, but Trower generally stayed active. 1987's Passion is interesting because it straddles '70s grittiness and '80s slickness.         "Caroline" earned a bit of rock radio airplay, and justifiably so, thanks to its hooks and Trower's warm guitar solo; Pattison's singing is reliable, but his voice isn't quite as rich, deep and distinctive as that of James Dewar, Trower's best-known vocalist. "If Forever" is a clean, no-frills ballad, and Trower's guitar solo balances blues and pop. Both "Won't Even Think About You" and "Passion" are melodic hard rock.         As one of the co-leaders of  Steely Dan , Donald Fagen developed a smooth, sophisticated blend of jazz, R&B, pop, and rock, a fusion that relied on lyrical wit, technical acumen, and smooth groove. Along with his partner  Walter Becker , Fagen honed this style over the course of the 1970s, a journey culminating with 1980's  Gaucho . The pair parted ways after its release and while they'd reunite a decade later -- first on each other's solo records, then on-stage, and then ultimately in the studio with 2000's Grammy-winning  Two Against Nature  -- their 1980s hiatus gave Fagen the opportunity to establish himself as a solo artist with  The Nightfly .   POPOL VUH  Letzte Tage, Letzte Nachte  (UA, 1976) - Krautrock       A vast improvement over and refinement of the previous album (Das Hohelied Salomos), on Letzte Tage - Letzte Nachte Daniel Fichelscher's percussion is scaled back in the mix and no longer overwhelms his excellent guitar work, which in its interplays with Al Gromer's sitar is one of the true treats of this album. Like the best Popol Vuh works, the album produces ethereal, delicate sheets of sound, with Djong Yun's beautiful vocals occasionally emerging. Relaxing, enchanting, tranquil, placid, and unfailingly gentle, Letzte Tage - Letzte Nachte is a top flight Popol Vuh album which will be of interest to anyone keen on the New Agey end of Krautrock.   HARLIS  Harlis  (Sky,1976) - Krautrock       With "Harlis," Sky Records has undoubtedly made a fitting start to their rerelease series. Charly Maucher and Wolfgang Krantz evoke memories of JANE, but the debut focuses more on a loose, fluffy West Coast sound that sounds incredibly American and was perhaps positively received precisely because of its unpretentiousness. Arndt Schulze's guitar playing is an absolute highlight, and those who know the band will be pleasantly surprised by the loving care with which this little gem from Germany has been dusted off and reissued.   STREETMARK  Nordland  (Sky,1976) - Prog/Krautrock       Streetmark came from the D'sseldorf region and were found in 1968 by female keyboardist Dorothea Raukes and guitarist Thomas Schreiber.An early concert review of the time described them as a band ''combining Baroque-type Rock with breezy Jazz Rock'', however the jazzy influences seem to fade by mid-70s, when the band recorded the debut ''Nordland'' in October 75' at Conny Plank's Tonstudio in Neukirchen, eventually released the following year on German label Sky Records.   GINHOUSE  Ginhouse  (B&C,1971) - Prog/Blues rock        Very strong, atmospheric originals with moody flute and some aggressive guitar work mix well with a complete reimagining of the Beatles' "And I Love Her" which alternates between jazzy octaves and pummelling drums. Best of all though are the creepy cadences of "The Tyne God".   FLOWER TRAVELLIN' BAND  Satori  (Atlantic,1971) - Rock       Their first album draws a lot of attention due to it's eye-catching, naked, Easy Rider referencing cover, but is made up primarily of covers. This, their second album is where it's at. This could well be the heaviest album to come out of Japan in the seventies. Superb doom-laden stoner rock with awesome fuzzy guitar riffs and screechy Robert Plant style vocals. Often compared to Black Sabbath. Some nice psychedelic moments later on too.   FRANK ZAPPA  The Man From Utopia  (Barking Pumpkin,1983) - Rock        T his album is an enjoyable experience for any Zappa fan. Though it sports to very boring tracks that mar it's rating slightly, the rest of the album's quirky, light-hearted experimentation is to be applauded. Zappa manages to sound like he is re-inventing his sound only for enjoyment and he never strikes me as self-indulgent in this great album.
