It's bucolic, laid back, freewheeling and a pleasure from start to finish. Its mix of sultriness and innocence reminds us if just how great a loss Riperton – who died tragically young of cancer in 1979 – was to the world.         KISS fans will recognize Anton Fig as the man who “sat in” for Peter Criss on both the Dynasty and Unmasked albums. More widely, he was known as the house drummer for the Late Show with David Letterman from 1986 through Letterman’s retirement in 2015. Aside from that, he was and still is the drummer of choice for all of former KISS guitarist Ace Frehley’s various solo works including Frehley’s Comet. Anton is known as “The Thunder From Downunder,” with a penchant for Jazz inspired, Fusion filled swoons that could bring even the cheesiest of 80s Rock to life in a way that most drummers of the era couldn’t or weren’t allowed to.   STILLWATER  I Reserve The Right!  (Capricorn,1978) - Southern rock       They look like they just got off work for the day at the farm, so you know without the image they'd better have some chops to warrant this record's release. Lead guitarist Rob Walker's "Alone on a Saturday Night" is a beautiful song, with drummer Sebie Lacey getting the honors for the lead vocal. It is the tune that stands out and grabs you on a decent outing produced by Stillwater and engineer Tad Bush for Buddy Buie Productions. The title track sounds like it is a cross between Duke & the Drivers meets Bachman Turner Overdrive sans Randy Bachman; it is truck-driving rock without the production qualities of "Alone on a Saturday Night" or the other subdued highlight here, "Women (Beautiful Women)."   RUNESTAFF  Runestaff  (Heavy Metal Records,1985) - NWOBHM       Runestaff began life in Ipswitch, England in 1980. Originally the group was an all male progressive rock band. Their first recording would be a three track demo cassette released in 1982. Guitarist/vocalist Andy Page would leave the band apparently frustrated over the direction of the band. Vocalist Joanna Symes was brought in and in a twist of fate Andy Page decided to return.       And while the group are often lumped in with the NWOBHM movement the truth is their sound owes a great deal more to American rock than to what was in their own backyard. With Joanna Symes on the mic (who sounds a great deal like Pat Benatar) the band offers up thirty minutes of enjoyable rock.   FRANKIE MILLER  Standing On The Edge  (Capitol,1982) - Rock       Frankie Miller’s eighth solo album “Standing On The Edge” was his first away from the Chrysalis label and was also at that point his rockiest and most polished effort. The bar room backing or stripped back blues and soul of the earlier albums being replaced with a polished, sleek and far more rocky production. Musically and arrangement wise this was more akin to Bad Company, Foreigner or even Whitesnake than the old blues and soul feel of its predecessors. Thats to take nothing away from those albums by the way as each and every one of them was a classic in its own right.   CLANCY  Seriously Speaking  (WB,1975) - Jazz-Funk rock       Formed in London, England in 1975,  Clancy quickly became a popular live attraction, blending skilled musicianship with the relaxed, goodtime atmosphere of contemporaries Kokomo and ‘pub rock’ favourites Bees Make Honey.   BLUE ASH  No More, No Less  (Mercury,1973) - Rock, Power pop       Peers of Big Star and the Raspberries, Ohio's Blue Ash rejected the then-prevalent prog rock, heavy metal and singer-songwriter navel-gazing in favour of succinct mid-60s influenced, harmony-drenched three-minute nuggets.        Bassist Ian Hill is the only original member of the heavy metal institution Judas Priest remaining from the band's 1970 formation. Longtime lead singer Rob Halford joined up in 1973, supplanting founding vocalist Al Atkins. Guitarist Glenn Tipton joined in 1974, and drummer Scott Travis joined in 1989. Since Tipton sparsely tours these days for health reasons, guitarists Richie Faulkner and Andy Sneap currently fill the gap.           Wayne Fontana was born Glynn Ellis in Manchester, England, on 28 October 1945. He started his musical career at school with a skiffle group called The Velfins and later formed a Rock & Roll outfit called The Jets, with whom he worked the pubs and clubs of Greater Manchester.       In 1963 the group was spotted playing in Manchester’s Oasis Club and asked to undertake an audition for Philips/Fontana Records at the same venue on the following evening in front of a live audience.       Their debut Fontana single – released a few months later – was a cover version of Bo Diddley ‘s Roadrunner , which enjoyed moderate success.       A year and two more singles later, though, they finally hit the chart jackpot with a cover of Major Lance’s American hit Um Um Um Um Um Um which reached #2 in Britain, and in 1965 their single Game Of Love topped the British and American charts.       During the sa...

       O n the one hand, it's noble of Scott Gorham to rename his Lynott-less version of Thin Lizzy for the purposes of a recording career. On the other, given that the music they make would fit snugly on to a late-70s Lizzy album – right down to singer Ricky Warwick's inflections and asides – it seems a little self-defeating. The stand-out is the most Lizzyesque song, Bound for Glory , with one of those twin lead guitar lines kicking into a riff filled with empty space: it's like 1976 all over again. Conversely, the worst song is where they take things too far and step outside Lizzydom: Kingdom of the Los t revs up the Celtic folk influence nicely, then charges into a boozealong chorus more suited to one of those aggressively Irish punk bands from the US. Between those two poles falls plenty of enjoyable melodic hard rock, never poor, though not always scaling the heights. But then Thin Lizzy were never the most consistent of studio bands, so maybe that's fitting. ...

  THUNDERSTICK  Feel Like Rock'n'Roll?  (Thunderbolt,1983) - NWOBHM       Thunderstick himself gained popularity and success as the eccentric, flamboyant drummer of Samson. Dressing up in gimp gear, leather, and performing in cages, with the popular act must have been an enjoyable experience for him, as it is rumored he turned down an offer to play in Iron Maiden to replace the often underrated Clive Burr, as he was enjoying his persona, and moderate success in the bands. I’m not sure if this rumor is true, or if it is, if he is kicking himself for not taking the opportunity to play with what became arguably the most successful British metal band to grow out the London scene. Either way, playing in Samson itself wasn’t enough, and he opted to form this act, fronted by female vocalist Jodee Valentine. Thunderstick here has a melodic, poppy, yet energetic sound.   TOKYO BLADE  Tokyo Blade  (Powerstation, 1983) -NWOBHM       Tokyo Blade definitely had some talent and wrote a few very catchy tunes. The playing wasn't spectacular, but it was more than competent on cuts like "Powergame" and "Break the Chains." They had the same heavy riffing and commercial sensibilities of the early Saxon albums. It all came together on the band's signature song, "If Heaven is Hell." This song is a true gem of the NWOBHM. It has a smashing chorus, an intricate structure that creates emotional ups and downs, great drumming and wonderful leads. If the Blade could have recreated the magic of this track again, there's no doubt in my mind they would have been picked up by a major label. Unfortunately, the album is dogged by some less than stellar songs like "On Through the Night", "Killer City" and "Liar."   VENOM  Official Bootleg  (American Phonograph, 1985) - Heavy metal       Oh Venom... So many different live albums to listen to, and pretty much all of them sound like the Show was taped and recorded in a filthy public toilet rather than at the legendary Hammersmith Odeon. This type of quantity over quality mentality on the part of the band is probably more than enough to frustrate most dedicated fans       Through the negativity, there are some bright spots on the album. Mantas’s soloing on “Seven Gales of Hell” is quite good because it breaks through the dirge of the album. In addition, Cronus’s vocals can actually be heard on some parts of the song. So, I should say that this is the best song on the album by default but the song does drag on a bit too long.
