     Ever the chameleonic band, California pop duo Sparks haven taken many shapes in their 50-year career. However, few projects stack up against their eighth record, No. 1 in Heaven. Energized by the hit synth-disco single (and Joy Division-influencing) “The Number One Song in Heaven,” No. 1 in Heaven is a club record that combines the iconic collaboration between Giorgio Moroder and Donna Summer with their own bizarre taste. In turn, Moroder produced No. 1 in Heaven and helped transform Sparks into one of the most daring bands around. Gone were the days of their guitar-focused records that preceded their work with Moroder. They quickly adopted sequencers and synthesizers and built witty, energetic and genius songs like “Tryouts for the Human Race” and “Academy Award Performance”—both of which expanded the contemporary palette of synth-pop, a sub-genre that was only just recently getting its wings. Rivaled only by their 1982 album Angst in My Pants, No. 1 in Heaven is not just the greatest Sparks record of all-time; it’s the greatest synth-pop record ever made, with a nebula soundscape as technicolor as it is curious and era-defining.

  IAN MATTHEWS  Some Days You Eat The Bear...  (Elektra,1974) - Country rock       Ian Matthews moved away from country rock on Some Days You Eat The Bear and Some Days The Bear Eats You, and switched between the LA country sound, the West Coast Sound and soft rock. The music was slick, polished and radio friendly. That was no surprise, given the personnel that played on the album. They provided the perfect accompaniment for Ian Matthews. Especially on his rueful cover of Tom Waits’ Ol’ 55, and soul-baring covers of I Don’t Wanna Talk About It and Tried So Hard. There was also a cover of Steely Dan’s Dirty Work, where Ian Matthews and his all-star band stay true to the carefully crafted original. Then on Wailing Goodbye, Keep On Sailing and Home Ian Matthews’ showcased his talents as a singer and songwriter. However, he had kept one of his finest songs until last. The melodic and memorable strains of The Fault closed Some Days You Eat The Bear and Some Days...

  ANDWELLA  World's End  (Reflection,1970) - Psychedelic rock       Following the break-up of Belfast psych-blues trio The Method, teenage singer-songwriter David Lewis moved to London, formed Andwellas Dream and signed to CBS. Though their roots show with a fondness for Cream-like workouts, debut album Love And Poetry (1969) shows an emerging pastoral, psych-pop side, with standouts The Days Grew Longer For Love and Midday Sun.       After a move to Reflection Records, World’s End followed in 1970. It sounds like a lot of living was done in the interim – the grooves are deeper, the guitars stingier, the writing more worldly. The McCartney-ish ballad Lady Love and the blissful I’m Just Happy To See You Get Her show a burgeoning talent.   BREAD  Baby I'm-A Want You  (Elektra,1972) - Soft rock       When Bread's first album was released, the group was dismissed in many circles as a Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young carbon. Since then, Bread has become one of the most consistent hit making musical aggregations in the U.S. and as the LP shows, they sure have that hit formula down pat; catchy and somewhat melodic rockers that are all under 3 1/2 minutes in playing time, just perfect for all those AM program directors who have made Bread this generation's Lettermen. Like The Guess Who, Bread has bridged the gap between bubblegum and progressive, though many of their ballads, like "Baby I'm-A Want You" and "Everything I Own" lean more towards the saccharine.       There is no doubt as to Bread's musicianship, for all its members are accomplished and respected studio musicians.
