TEDDY PENDERGRASS  Teddy Pendergrass  (PIR,1977) - Soul


     It was only a matter of time before Teddy Pendergrass would leave Harold Melvin & the Bluenotes, the group he’d made his name in. As their lead singer, he had delighted with his gospel-influenced vocals on hits such as If You Don’t Know Me By Now and the uplifting Wake Up Everybody. In 1977, he finally went solo.
     His self-titled debut album captures some of his greatest performances. Backed by PIR’s house band, MFSB, it is an underrated example of orchestrated soul. I Don’t Love You Anymore is a huge, upbeat anthem about, well, divorce. Pendergrass will sort out the financial side of things, and then scarper: “But we can’t live together, this way will be much better”.  The More I Get, The More I Want is a frantic floor-filler, and its breakdown, focusing on the bass, is one of the most inspirational in 70s soul.

  BATTEAUX  Batteaux  (Columbia,1973) - Folk,Rock,Funk         Batteaux  is a long treasured and notoriously under appreciated 70’s underground folk-funk classic. The only release by the Batteau brother duo is a perfect mix of balearic blue eyed soul and west coast country rock. Admirers old and new have been constantly pondering, why wasn’t this better known?   MICK FLEETWOOD'S ZOO  I'm Not Me  (RCA,1983) - Rock        The story behind Mick Fleetwood’s 1983  I’m Not Me  is well known. It was his second “solo” album for RCA Records, but everyone, especially Fleetwood, knew it was a band effort. Fleetwood’s name was the draw, but The Zoo was a fully formed ensemble that had been playing together for a year. This occurred because Fleetwood wanted a real group and not an album put out by studio musicians who’d come by, do their parts, and ride off to other projects.        The principal members of the Zoo were Fleetwood on drums, guitarist/singers Billy Burnette and Steve Ross, and bassist/singer George Hawkins. (Hawkins had appeared on Fleetwood’s previous release,  The Visitor ).   DAVID ACKLES  American Gothic  (Elektra,1972) - Rock/Americana       A former Vaudeville performer, Illinois-born Ackles was hired by Elektra Records in the mid-1960s as a paid songwriter, a job that ultimately landed him a five-record deal that would yield this Bernie Taupin produced album, among three others. It was this unlikely clash of anachronistic show business and modern-day lyricism that so deeply informs his recorded output. Alternately calling to mind Hoagy Charmichael, Irving Berlin, Robbie Robertson, Tim Hardin, and Scott Walker, Ackles forged an utterly unique sound out of stray parts that comprise a whole that is as uncompromising as it is unrivaled. Nearly entirely eschewing the singer-songwriter staple of guitar, Ackles favors an elliptical piano that weaves itself around the moaning “high school” horns that were so memorably employed by the Band on their self-titled record.
