PETER BARDENS  The Answer  (Transatlantic,1970) - Psychedelic/Prog rock


     If you’re a connoisseur of psychedelic blues-rock, The Answer may be right up your alley. If you’re here chasing the steeples of sound associated with Camel’s classic albums, however, you’ve come to the wrong place. There’s a whiff of the stuff on the opening track, The Answer, and Camel did revisit Homage to the God of Light in their early days. The rest of the record relies mostly on basic blues-rock riffs with Green’s guitar solos liberally sprinkled on top. The island pop of I Don’t Want to Go Home is a pleasant exception.

        Jason Eli Becker  is an American composer and former guitarist. At the age of 16, he became part of the  Shrapnel Records -produced duo  Cacophony  with his friend  Marty Friedman , and they released two albums,  1987 and  1988. Since the dissolution of Cacophony in 1989, Becker has undertaken a solo career, releasing seven albums since his 1988 debut  Perpetual Burn . He later joined  David Lee Roth 's solo band and recorded one album with him .       Becker's performing career was cut short by  ALS, which he was diagnosed with in 1989.       Often incorporating advanced techniques such as sweep picking, alternate picking, artificial harmonic accenting, tapping and hybrid picking; he was among the leaders of the field during the technical shred guitar and  neoclassical metal  trend of the mid to late 1980s and is still respected and honored by his musician peers t...

  DAVID ACKLES  American Gothic  (Elektra,1972) - Rock/Americana       A former Vaudeville performer, Illinois-born Ackles was hired by Elektra Records in the mid-1960s as a paid songwriter, a job that ultimately landed him a five-record deal that would yield this Bernie Taupin produced album, among three others. It was this unlikely clash of anachronistic show business and modern-day lyricism that so deeply informs his recorded output. Alternately calling to mind Hoagy Charmichael, Irving Berlin, Robbie Robertson, Tim Hardin, and Scott Walker, Ackles forged an utterly unique sound out of stray parts that comprise a whole that is as uncompromising as it is unrivaled. Nearly entirely eschewing the singer-songwriter staple of guitar, Ackles favors an elliptical piano that weaves itself around the moaning “high school” horns that were so memorably employed by the Band on their self-titled record.   MELISSA MANCHESTER Don't Cry Out Loud  (Arista,1978) - Pop      Most of the album’s tracks were recorded with Leon Ware producing; Ware had expressed an interest in recording Manchester based on the singer’s version of the Ware composition “I Wanna Be Where You Are” featured on the 1977 album release  Singin’… . The tracks Manchester recorded with Ware intended as the singer’s 1978 album release – which Manchester planned to name  Caravan  – were all original material except “Bad Weather”, a Stevie Wonder composition which had been a single for the Supremes in 1974. When Manchester submitted the  Caravan  tracks to Arista, label owner Clive Davis felt none of the tracks would afford Manchester the Top 40 hit required to revive her career and at Davis’ strong suggestion Manchester recorded the Peter Allen and Carole Bayer Sager composition “Don’t Cry Out Loud” with Harry Maslin producing.
