ONCE UPON A TIME.....The Earthshaker

 

KOKO TAYLOR  The Earthshaker  (Alligator,1978) - Blues


     From the opening growled notes of “Let The Good Times Roll,” the listener knows that this isn’t going to be your standard 12-bar blues album. Taylor and her band (including Pinetop Perkins on keyboards) are going to make these nine tracks an absolute celebration. Taylor and crew plow through some standards like “Spoonful” and the gender-modified “I’m A Woman” (which, ironically, pairs nicely with the Muddy Waters version of the original recorded around the same time frame), and introduce a Taylor-penned original, “Please Don’t Dog Me”. If anything, the disc might have benefited with the inclusion of more originals like this one.
     Standouts? Take your pick. Obviously, choosing “Let The Good Times Roll” to open the disc was a master stroke, as was closing the album with Taylor’s trademark song “Wang Dang Doodle”. But there are others that demand your attention just as much, from her cover of Dixon’s “Hey Bartender” to her take on “You Can Have My Husband”.

  MICK FLEETWOOD'S ZOO  I'm Not Me  (RCA,1983) - Rock        The story behind Mick Fleetwood’s 1983  I’m Not Me  is well known. It was his second “solo” album for RCA Records, but everyone, especially Fleetwood, knew it was a band effort. Fleetwood’s name was the draw, but The Zoo was a fully formed ensemble that had been playing together for a year. This occurred because Fleetwood wanted a real group and not an album put out by studio musicians who’d come by, do their parts, and ride off to other projects.        The principal members of the Zoo were Fleetwood on drums, guitarist/singers Billy Burnette and Steve Ross, and bassist/singer George Hawkins. (Hawkins had appeared on Fleetwood’s previous release,  The Visitor ).   BATTEAUX  Batteaux  (Columbia,1973) - Folk,Rock,Funk         Batteaux  is a long treasured and notoriously under appreciated 70’s underground folk-funk classic. The only release by the Batteau brother duo is a perfect mix of balearic blue eyed soul and west coast country rock. Admirers old and new have been constantly pondering, why wasn’t this better known? The record had all the ingredients for commercial success. It was released on Columbia in ’73, features virtuoso guest players including Tom Scott, John Guerin, and Andy Newmark, as well as incredible songwriting and musicianship from the Batteau brothers themselves.
