LITTLE DRUMMER BOY.....Robb Reiner

Слика
Robb Reiner is a founding member of the rock band Anvil and has been at the forefront of metal and rock drumming, introducing various techniques that have become iconic within the genre. Drawing inspiration from jazz drumming legends such as Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa, as well as rock drummers like Ian Paice and John Bonham, Reiner has crafted a unique blend of speed, power, and technicality.       He’s known for his ability to seamlessly transition between intricate patterns and unleash thunderous fills. ONCE UPON A TIME.....Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves

Слика
CHER  Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves  (Kapp/MCA,1971) - Pop       With the exception of the one-off album  3614 Jackson Highway,  produced at Muscle Shoals Sound Studio,  Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves  serves as Cher's first real break from Bono's production. It was written to showcase and cultivate her signature contralto, and the title track became her first No. 1 hit on the  Billboard  Hot 100. It even scored her a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Vocal Performance (albeit losing out to Carole King's  Tapestry ). TRACKLIST : The Way Of Love                          Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves                          He'll Never Know                          Fire And Rain                 ...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....Linda Ronstadt

Слика
LINDA RONSTADT  Linda Ronstadt  (Capitol,1972) - Country rock         Linda Ronstadt’s  vastly underrated eponymous third solo album   possesses an irresistibly down-home sound, amplified by the presence of her up-and-coming peers, rendering it a foundational recording of its genre. Although the album’s commercial failure prompted Ronstadt’s departure from Capitol,  Linda Ronstadt  is a remarkable release, its solid musicianship and twangy charm having helped set an early stage for the emergent country rock subgenre soon to take American radio by storm, perfecting the timeless postcard notion of a breezily romantic ’70s Los Angeles for a nation yet beguiled by its hazy mythology. ONCE UPON A TIME.....Never Enough

Слика
PATTY SMYTH  Never Enough  (Columbia,1987) - Rock       A tour de force for Patty Smyth’s first solo record. Although this was supposed to be a Scandal album, the band has fallen apart by the end of The Warrior album tour. Patty really let’s loose on this record and shows her immense talent on this record. Favorite tracks: Never Enough, Downtown Train, Give It a Time, Heartache Heard Around The World, Isn’t It Enough, Sue Lee, and The River Cried. TRACKLIST: Never Enough                      Downtown Train                      Give It Time                      Call To Heaven                      The River Cried                      Isn't It Enough           ...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....Explorer Suite

Слика
NEW ENGLAND  Explorer Suite  (Elektra,1980) - Rock/AOR            They combined the art rock leanings of early 1970's ELO and Styx with the catchy rock hooks of Cheap Trick - briefly tagging it all with inspired keyboard solos some of which would not have been at all out of place on a genuine prog album. Most of the time, they walked a fine line between hard rock, arena rock, pop rock, and pomp rock. Think of a unique mix of Europe's "The Final Countdown" with ELO's "Discovery". ONCE UPON A TIME.....To The Power Of Three

Слика
3  To The Power Of Three  (Geffen,1988) - Progressive pop/rock       While it's not ELP...it's not even Emerson, Lake & Powell sounding either. It sounds more in the neo prog. tradition. Very '80s sounding with that '80s production in the vein of later '80s Saga. This '3' LP is certainly not as bad as everyone says it is, but it's not great either. Let's put it this way. If someone were to give me the choice to listen to ELP's _Love Beach_, Emerson Lake & Powell or 3's _To The Power Of Three...I would pick the latter. The best track is the 3 parter _Desde La Vida_ which can be heard on this website. It's really the only thing that hints at prog.rock. The other tracks(no real highlights) are well written AOR rock pieces with very little hit potential. Throw this album in with most inoffensive material coming from the likes of the Alan Parson Project or '80s Camel. Simply put, this is well produced music but nothing too amazin...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....3 Ships

Слика
JON ANDERSON  3 Ships  (Elektra,1985) - Progressive rock, Pop       The album, which was released in 1985, is dominated by Anderson's vocals (of course) and the keyboards of Rhet Lawrence. The latter may be slightly surprising, given Anderson's work with Vangelis around that time. Indeed, Vangelis even writes one of the tracks. A number of well known musicians also contribute, including sometime Yes man, Trevor Rabin.        There is a rather strange mixture of traditional Christmas carols, and Anderson composed originals with a festive and/or peace on earth theme. The tracks are mixed together in such a way that one minute you're singing along with a song you have know since childhood, the next you are entirely unfamiliar with the piece. TRACKLIST : Save All Your Love                        Easier Said And Done                   ...

VOICES IN THE SKY.....Brenda Lee

Слика
Brenda Lee  has had a stellar music career, beginning as a rockabilly teen, moving into pop stardom, and eventually returning to her country roots. She is among the most versatile singers ever to record in Nashville and “a prodigy so gifted,” biographers Mary Bufwack and Robert Oermann write, “that melody is as natural as breath.”       Singers like Brenda Lee are born, not made. Which isn’t to say that Brenda Lee didn’t work hard—you don’t get the Beatles as your opening act by resting on your laurels. ONCE UPON A TIME.....Still

Слика
TONY BANKS  Still  (Virgin,1991) - Rock       The album had immense potential. A remarkable set of highly respected musicians recorded it, the songs are catchy, no less than three singles were released, but nothing happened. Still is the perfect starting point for newcomers to the world of Tony Banks before they progress to albums like A Curious Feeling. TRACKLIST : Red Day On Blue Street                    Angel Face                    The Gift                    Still It Takes Me By Surprise                    Hero For An Hour                    I Wanna Change The Score                    Water Out Of Wine               ...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....White City

Слика
PETE TOWNSHEND  White City  (Atco,1985) - Rock       White City  had the misfortune of being allied with the inscrutable short film of the same name, though outside of that context it’s a stirring album of top-notch material. Forgetting the movie for a moment (handily done), these songs represent the most polished rock tunes to come from  Pete Townshend ’s pen in some time. “Give Blood,” “Brilliant Blues,” “Hiding Out,” “Secondhand Love” and “White City Fighting” belong with his best: rousing, resilient rock songs that treat self-assessment as a contact sport. TRACKLIST : Give Blood                        Brilliant Blues                        Face The Face                        Hiding Out                       ...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....Just Like This

Слика
MICK RONSON  Just Like This  (Burning Airlines,1999) - Rock       This set of previously unissued recordings from former David Bowie and Mott the Hoople guitarist, the late, great Mick Ronson, is a testament to the unique and signature style of this often overlooked musician. Comprised of twelve tracks recorded in 1976 at Bearsville Studios in Woodstock, NY, this was to be the first sessions of the then “new” Mick Ronson band, after the two solo albums  Slaughter on 10th Avenue  and  Play Don’t Worry . Mick’s crystal clear tone, dripping with sustain and emotion, distorted and dirty as well on occasion, is at the forefront throughout these songs, and his Bowie-esque vocals fit the music perfectly. Those expecting a similar sound to the Ziggy Stardust days, or even Mott’s “All the Young Dudes” will be in for a surprise, as  Just Like This  is unabashed hard rock, guitar hero music, squarely in the Frank Marino, Leslie West, Robin T...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....World's End

Слика
ANDWELLA  World's End  (Reflection,1970) - Psychedelic rock       Following the break-up of Belfast psych-blues trio The Method, teenage singer-songwriter David Lewis moved to London, formed Andwellas Dream and signed to CBS. Though their roots show with a fondness for Cream-like workouts, debut album Love And Poetry (1969) shows an emerging pastoral, psych-pop side, with standouts The Days Grew Longer For Love and Midday Sun.       After a move to Reflection Records, World’s End followed in 1970. It sounds like a lot of living was done in the interim – the grooves are deeper, the guitars stingier, the writing more worldly. The McCartney-ish ballad Lady Love and the blissful I’m Just Happy To See You Get Her show a burgeoning talent. ONCE UPON A TIME...Come From The Shadows

Слика
JOAN BAEZ Come From The Shadows  (A&M,1972) - Folk        While Baez was a force in the 60s anti-war movement and a civil rights advocate, politics hit her closer to home in 1969 when her husband, the anti-war journalist  David Harris ,  was jailed for draft evasion. The resulting album, Come From the Shadows, had Americana flourishes, a folk soul, and was unambiguously in conversation with 70s rock. In the Quiet Morning is an ecstatic elegy for Janis Joplin, the stately piano of Rainbow Road recalls classic Elton John, while To Bobby calls out Bob Dylan for his lapsed activism ( he was unamused ). Most stunningly, Baez is reinvented as a country empath in Prison Trilogy (Billy Rose), recruiting a cast of Nashville musicians in a call-out of police brutality and the inhuman treatment of undocumented immigrants, climaxing in a grave call to action: “Help us raze the prisons to the ground.” TRACKLIST: Prison Trilogy (Billy Rose)   ...

ONCE UPON A TIME.....Changes

Слика
ETTA JAMES  Changes  (MCA,1980) - Soul, Funk       This was released in 1980 and produced by the great Allen Tousaint.  This is classic soul music and Etta was a the top of her game despite this being a lost period for Etta.        Tousaint assembled and wonderfully funky New Orleans cast to back Etta.  He had her cover several of his great songs and she does them proud.  One of my favorite Tousaint songs is “Night People” and this Etta version is my all time favorite. She purrs, she growls.        If you are a fan of neo-soul, for example Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, you will love this album. BASS CULTURE.....Bob Babbitt

Слика
Although the “Motown Sound” is greatly associated with James Jamerson, Babbitt was another a staple bass player on the Detroit R&B scene. During the late 1960s and early ’70s, Babbitt frequently recorded at Golden World Studios – a competitor of Motown at the time – with artists such as Edwin Starr and the Capitols. This led to touring with Stevie Wonder, who he then joined at Motown studios to record “We Can Work It Out” and “Signed, Sealed, Delivered.”       Babbitt was quickly able to establish himself as an in-demand session player at Motown and contributed to hits by The Temptations, Gladys Knight, Marvin Gaye, and many others.       After making his mark on the Detroit session scene, Babbitt relocated to New York and frequently commuted to the “City of Brotherly Love.” Working with producers Gamble and Huff at Philadelphia International, he laid down the bass on a number of Philly Soul hits. ONCE UPON A TIME.....Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee

Слика
GILA  Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee  (WB,1973) - Kraut/Prog rock       "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" is a concept album about the destruction of the american indians during the mythic Amerian West. Florian Frike of Popol Vuh plays the keyboards accompanied by Conny Veit on the guitars. Here the Space rock tinged with psychedelic effects slightly leaves the place to touching folk-pop songs (dominated by ethereal female vocals). This one looks like more to a Popol Vuh album at their most acoustic moments. Easy and pleasant listening.
