MONTAGE  Montage  (Laurie,1969) - Psychedelic pop


     After leaving the Left Banke, Michael Brown -- who had been the group's chief artistic force as principal songwriter, arranger, and keyboardist -- worked with Montage to continue in the splendid Baroque pop/rock vein of his early recordings with the Left Banke. 
     Montage sounds far more like the real follow-up to the Left Banke's first LP, Walk Away Renee/Pretty Ballerina, than the actual one, The Left Banke, Too. This is because after the first LP the band's three singers had sadly parted ways with keyboardist and prime songwriter Michael Brown, who instead became Montage's mentor/mastermind. (It's a long story: Brown's dad was managing the band to the distrust of the other members and Brown, like Brian Wilson, similarly disdained touring in favor of staying home to write and record.) 
      And though Brown was not technically a Montage member, he not only wrote all the music and produced this LP, but he also played all the trademark piano and organ and charted the vocal arrangements. Yet the four New Jersey no-names he found clearly translated his vision of extraordinarily lush, unspeakably beautiful orchestral chart pop.

  BATTEAUX  Batteaux  (Columbia,1973) - Folk,Rock,Funk         Batteaux  is a long treasured and notoriously under appreciated 70’s underground folk-funk classic. The only release by the Batteau brother duo is a perfect mix of balearic blue eyed soul and west coast country rock. Admirers old and new have been constantly pondering, why wasn’t this better known? The record had all the ingredients for commercial success. It was released on Columbia in ’73, features virtuoso guest players including Tom Scott, John Guerin, and Andy Newmark, as well as incredible songwriting and musicianship from the Batteau brothers themselves.   JERRY GARCIA  Garcia  (WB,1972) - Folk/Psychedelic rock       One thing you have to say about Jerry Garcia -- he sure does work a lot! In fact, considering the multitude of duties which being a mainstay of the Grateful Dead and part-time guitarist with Howard Wales' group must impose on him, it's hard to imagine where Garcia found the time and energy to do this solo album. The songs, written by Jerry in collaboration with Billy Kreutzmann and Robert Hunter, are very much in the style of recent Dead compositions -- rocking country-blues numbers. Save for "Late for Supper," which is an otherworldly electronic attempt, any one of them could have been tacked onto the  American Beauty  package. In other words, they're not downright country as the songs on  Workingman's Dead ,  but pretty nearly.
