VOICES IN THE SKY...Beryl Marsden

 


     She was born Beryl Hogg in Liverpool's Irish enclave in 1947.She started calling herself "Beryl Marsden" when she began singing professionally.Beryl started sitting in as a guest singer at all the clubs and hangouts in Liverpool like The Cavern and The Casbah where the local Merseybeat groups all played.She sang her first record at the Cavern Club which was called "I Know You Don't Love Me Anymore"- this was a near hit but it didn't crack the UK top 10.Beryl followed up "I Know You Don't Love Me Anymore" with a nice cover of "When The Lovelight Shines through his Eyes." This had been a B-side for The Supremes. Many of Beryl's records didn't crack the top 10, yet her career definitely had its highs. After all, she got the plumb spot as the opening act on The Beatles 1964 UK tour.
     Beryl joined with Rod Stewart in the spring of 1966 to form Shotgun Express which was successful for awhile but broke up in January 1967 when Rod joined The Jeff Beck Group as lead singer. In the seventies, Beryl was a session vocalist and a member of a group called Gambler. She fronted Beryl Marsden Band for a time. In the eighties, she was paid an immense compliment and was asked to join Martha and the Vandellas.

LITTLE DRUMMER BOY...Matt Cameron

        More than any other drummer, Matt Cameron laid the rhythmic foundation for the Nineties rock revolution, reconciling proggy technicality with overwhelming force. He aptly characterized his rotary-blade rhythms on the 1991 Soundgarden track "Jesus Christ Pose" as "a pure assault of the senses," but that efficient brutality wasn't necessarily characteristic of Cameron's work with the band – his drumming on  Superunknown  is as thoughtful as it is heavy, from the fluid asymmetry of "Spoonman" to the unshakeable backbeat of "Fell on Black Days." Twenty years after its release, Dave Grohl was  still raving , "Nobody played drums like Matt."   PETE SINFIELD  Still  (Manticore,1973) - Progressive rock       The name Pete Sinfield may not mean much to the casual prog observer but to aficionados his identity will always be linked to  King Crimson . As the band’s lyricist and, to a degree,  Robert Fripp ’s artistic muse, Sinfield contributed the lyrics to the first four Crimson albums.        For reasons unknown, the firm of Fripp and Sinfield ceased trading circa 1971 but, rather cunningly, former KC bassist  Greg Lake , perhaps sensing a lack of lyrical gravitas, created a similar role for him in the world-conquering  ELP .       Still , Sinfield’s first and only solo album was unveiled to the public in May 1973 and was quickly sidestepped by all but a very few discerning members of the progressive rock-buying public.  TRACKLIST : The Song Of The Sea Goat                          Under The Sky                          Will It Be You                          Wholefood Boogie                          Still
